Are Farm Dogs Happier Than Lap Dogs?
Modern Farmer ^ | June 10, 2014 | Monica Kim

It's a tale of two dogs. One, a puggle lounges peacefully on his owner’s lap. The other, a border collie, bounds freely across a grassy knoll.

Although the love between man and dog is indeed powerful, you might wonder whether the active, outdoors pup is enjoying a more enriching existence than his indoors counterpart. By keeping dogs as inside companions, are we asking them to lead less satisfying lives?

And companionship to biped mammals isn’t a job?

All dogs should be taken for a walk at least once a day weather permitting, and let out into a fenced area or taken out as nature calls. But, some breeds need outdoor time much more than others. Working breeds need to be given a task or a job and taught to do it, they’re essentially compelled by breeding. If you don’t give them one they’ll invent one, and you may not like what they’ve decided to do. Prime example, Border Collies. Extremely bright, energetic animals with a need to herd, they were bred to do it and live for it. They’ll do it to you, to other animals, you name it. A bored Border Collie with no task or job and no entertainment can be very, very destructive.

Mine have the run of the yard all day. I even put two doggie doors in so they can get in and out. One in the main house and another on the screen porch.

And then there's the wound up version. I had just saved a turtle from him and he was a bit excited. He jumped up and grabbed my shirt and tore out the who side because he wanted that turtle.

My dogs stay in the big kitchen but run out to protect the back yard from squirrels (who are not scared off from the fruit trees at all). I’ll try to walk them more but they’re happy with biscuits, their blankets, petting, belly rubs. the sound of the can opener, and the squirrels.

That’s ideal. I’ve got about 3/4 acre fenced and a back porch with dog door into a tiled utility room. They can come and go as they please, but still get extremely excited when the leashes come out, that means “go” whether it’s a ride in the car, a walk through the neighborhood beyond the fence, or a week at the beach. They do love to go.

We breed a similar type of humans, too. They’re called the welfare crowd. They follow the mail carrier around and begging government for a bigger check. They lounge on sofas, have fleas and sleep in beds most of the day where they keep each other warm and breed more welfare recipients. Taxpayers get bit by them often.

When the sun goes down, my dog wants to go out on his lead on the back deck, on coon watch. The boy has got to make sure is perimeter is secured.

Good dog!

I’ve got a female Treeing Walker, somebody abandoned her and I took her in as a pet. She puts her paws on my shoulders and scans the house for ceiling coons I guess, lol.

My farm dogs do not have real jobs as I am not a real farmer - major league hobby operation. But they don’t know this and are kept quite busy keeping an eye on the remaining elderly horse, the goats, and the neighbors’ cattle. They take turns keeping watch, check up on the domestic animals, chase off the wild animals and keep a sharp eye for FedEx and UPS. They are not stupid enough to mess with the barn cats. When fences need to be mended or brush burned, they know that their job is to keep a close eye on the entire operation, at least until they catch a whiff of rabbit.
