Mosin caliber Vepr, Russian anti-hog device

Posted on 06/16/2014 7:56:36 PM PDT by varmintman

I spoke to people from WPA at the NRA conference in Houston a year or so ago and they told me that the price of the ordinary Mosin (7.62x54) caliber Vepr should come to around $850 with half a year to a year and a number of them have been being sold on gunbroker.com for around that price recently:

The guys at the Molot plant seem to have outdone themselves on this one. This is a very big sort of a gun with most of the hunting ammo available featuring 203gr bullets, hammer forged and chrome-lined barrel and something like an RPK receiver, very strong. I was shooting this thing last Friday with a leftover PPK scope, two or three power and the 203gr ammo. I had a couple of 50 yard groups with bullets all but touching and a 200 yard group about the size of a softball, limited by the accuracy of the low power scope, i.e. I don't really know how accurate the thing is but it appears to be very accurate. The one I chose has the 20.5" barrel which strikes me as a good choice for both power and accuracy. Heating did not appear to affect accuracy; you can imagine that the barrel gets hot after 15 - 20 shots but it didn't seem to hurt anything.

This would obviously do an overwhelming job on any sort of a hog.

Thats a good tip, one man’s firm trigger is another man’s hair.

I’d suggest you take a look at a Savage 110. I got a nice package topped with a Nikon scope for less than $500. The Accu-Trigger is super clean and breaks like glass.

So if you’re not dead set on the 700 check that rifle out.

Did you consider taking the scope off and using iron sights?

Take a peek at the pig footage at www.huntingfootage.com. There are a few vids of spear hunts.

Have hunted pigs in SW GA for years. Have taken them with rifles, handguns, bow. Killed one with an axe once. Many of the spear hunts are only spear hunts in that the death blow is with the spear. Usually the pig is cornered by dogs at the time. It's not exactly a 12 yr old Masai boy taking out a lion. Shooting them off a golf cart with AR10 topped with gen4 NV is much, much more fun.

The old European boar spears were distinguished by a crossbar behind the head.

Without it, the boar would force his way down the length of the shaft and gut the hunter.

Pretty dangerous critters, in my book.

Don’t know if the US version is more or less the same.
