An NC woman revealed in the last line of her obituary last week that she was the great-aunt of the President of the United States.
Margaret Payne, age 87, of Chapel Hill died last Wednesday at a retirement community. She was the younger sister of Barack Obama’s grandmother, who actually did most of the parenting for the future president when he was growing up in Hawaii.
Payne was a professor of nutrition who taught at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and subsequently at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1980 to 1990. She authored numerous research articles and two books.
Her obituary said:
"Margaret A. Payne is survived by her brother Charles T. Payne and wife Melanie; her brother Jon V. Payne and wife Susan and friend Margery Duffey. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Richard Payne, Jon Allen Payne, Stacey Gray, Barack Obama and Maya Soetoro."
Stanley Dunham and his wife Madelyn were parents of Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham. Margaret Payne was the younger sister of Madelyn.

I read that his dad was James Earl Jones or Jimi Hendrix and his mom was for sure Barbara Stanwyk or Cher. Last week anyway.
Hard to keep up with the earthshattering theories these days.

Well, that’s one secret I think I would prefer to take to the grave with me. I would also try to hide that fact from Paul at the pearly gates.

If I was going to make an admission like that I would wait until I was dead too.
Would not be a surprise that he has not talked to her in the last couple of decades.
And she took his place of birth to her grave.
My first thought, how did we miss all this.
Isn’t that the truth? That is something I would not want anyone to know.
The mythical geneology re - emerges.
She was the sister of Madelyn Dunham and Charles T Payne, Charles was Deputy Director of the University of Chicago Library from the early fifties until his retirement in the 90’s, he was at the U of Chicago when zero lectured in Law there...and Melanie, the wife of Charles was on a committee with the wife of David Axelrod in the seventies, they all lived in Hyde Park.
You might recall, Stanley Ann was accepted to attend the University of Chicago - but ‘Dreams’ tells that her father wouldn’t let her go...
She did however, have a job as an au pair in Chicago ‘when she was only 16 then’ which would have been in 1958, and ‘Dreams’ also tells us she saw the film ‘Black Orpheus’ in Chicago, which opened in December 1959; she apparently spent quite some time with her Uncle Charles.
Why would the article headline refer to the sister of Madeline and Charles as NC WOMAN? It’s hardly a mystery, Madeline had siblings.
She could have apologize for NC not backing Obama in 2012.
