Prepare Without Looking Prepared
Survival Blog ^ | 6/25/14 | Farm Operator

“Have you watched Doomsday Preppers? Man, those people are crazy!”

“We’ve got this neighbor down the street who’s prepping for the end of the world. What a weirdo!”

We’ve all heard these comments (or similar ones). As for the wife and me, when friends, delivery men, in-laws, out-laws, offspring, or third cousins (who only show when they need something) come by the house, we don’t want them thinking we’re crazier than we are. Most importantly, we don’t want them knowing we’re prepping. For obvious security reasons, we don’t want those cousins to be the first at our doorstep when SHTF. So, how do we prepare without looking the part?

The wife and I are blessed to live in a good home on a remote farm in eastern Tennessee with plenty of resources at hand– good garden space, open fields in front, timber around, plenty of storage space, and a good defensible arrangement. We’re fortunate to keep most of our food stored in sheds and have a dry, cool basement to store food, ammo, medicine, and whatever else we need. Everything is stored in dusty old boxes and bags, clearly marked for what is NOT in them. When asked by our children why our milk is powdered or why their Mom makes her own washing detergent, we convincingly (and truthfully) respond that it saves lots of money.

Tree rat only (Sciurus niger). The species Ratus ratus has abandoned this property as unsafe. ;)

And I'm always up for trade... junk silver, or strong teenage daughters that can pull a plow.

Yep, I believe God has a really good sense of humor...

When I shed this mortal coil, we’re going to have a discussion...

Suppose it’s them or you. Who do you pick? I say, if someone has to go, it might as well be “them.”

you think you can really shoot people?...kill people?....I don’t know if I could...

You will know when the time comes, or you will die. It's basic survival. If you hesitate, you will likely not survive. Understand this and train for the eventuality and your odds of surviving go up exponentially. Doubt will get you killed.

I’m sure He does, too. Some are going to be shocked that He does.

UGH! I just prepared my first long tome in about a year (with pictures). Poof. Gone.

I'll try again next year.

The post was about preparing to live versus living to prepare. To all the outsiders who visit, our place is one to escape to relax. There are not outward signs of longterm preps for the uninitiated. They just see it as somewhere to have a drink and relax. To the initiated, our place is also somewhere to visit to relax.

My post did an IRS hard drive. UGH.

Let's see if at least one picture loads. Freepers are welcome for cigars and drinks.

P.S. Bears and bird feeders do not mix.

You might be surprised what you can do if you feel threatened. Fight or flight and there very well may be nowhere to run.

Grandkid was digging through my GOOD bag (inventory, they call snooping, now) and asked about La Santa Biblia Antiguo Y Neuvo Testamento (con referencias) published by the Sociedad Biblica Americana back in 1947.

I explained that in our part of the world, that might mean something.

Poor little Cambodian-American grandson... his spanish has tonal elements, but because I taught him... it's formal Castillian spanish.

I'm not sure I want to visit anywhere they might have bears or birds. Texas suits me fine. ;)

I think He has a big laugh whenever He hears one of us use the word “never.”

For something as important as our attitudes towards God that sure gets very little attention.

It may be that what will actually survive the best is churches! Not determined lone wolves in tiny units, movie dramas notwithstanding.

Definitely! I’ve learned that lesson many times and do my best not to repeat it. LOL.

I'll be happy to get the little bastards through memorizing the greek alphabet this summer.

Other grand-father is responsible for teaching them Cambodian. I work on Texan, American English, and Spanish as I'm able.

But they must speak proper Castillian Spanish.

I'm used to Tex-Mex and the polyglot that passes here in Texas from all over South America, but when I got to the middle of New Mexico... I was surprised that my grade-school Spanish was not only understood, but they didn't speak that other stuff...

Meh... Greek alphabet... 8 more weeks.... they have to be able to name and print, upper and lower case before the summer is over. And somewhere along the way, I have to find an alphabet song in Greek for them to learn.

It depends on what is in the “like minds.”

A bunch of lone wolves will not be anything else. They will mostly perish for the sake of their individual prides.

A church is a body; it is a body in times thick and thin.

One thing I have never heard of in the context of prepping is devotionals.

No, but you will find plenty of Bibles.

In fact when people list all their preps or what all is in their BOB's a Bible is included at least 90% of the time.
