Straight razor shaving...
Chasaway

Posted on 06/26/2014 12:28:00 PM PDT by Chasaway

I need some straight razor advice, from some straight razor veterans. I've been shaving with a safety razor, mug and brush for 12 years. I've moved to a shavette straight razor in the last 3 months.

It seems to me that moving to a pure straight razor will mean sending razors off to be honed 3-4 times per year @ around $30 per pop.

Besides the "romance" and general badass-ness of using a true straight razor, what would be the advantages/disadvantages of moving to a pure straight razor/throat cutter?

I generally shave in the shower.

All well and good when using a stick razor but...make sure you have absolutely solid footing. Had a severe back spasm once in the shower that left me and various fittings a mess. One of those white-out pain thingees.

There's a lot to be said for a brisk rub down with a thick towel before shaving. Kinda like having a towel over the shoulder to wipe the soap from the razor, but hey, that's part of my ritual. Go find your own and enjoy the quiet luxury.

Well, I can relate to the gagging part.

And FYI (not that you asked), but my chest hair is full and luxuriant.

Except for the odd stress test and/or EKG. Then it’s a little spotty.

I started shaving in the shower. Last thing I do before toweling off. The hot water and soaking makes all the difference. Beard comes off easily and the razors last much longer.

yep

Ouch!

(Appreciate the ‘full and luxuriant’. Women would rather cuddle up to a bear-skin rug than a piece of sandpaper.)

“...but hey, that’s part of my ritual. Go find your own and enjoy the quiet luxury...”

And isn’t that what it’s about? I’m definitely not looking for convenience or speed.

It’s about the experience. Now, shaving is an experience...a “luxury”. Not a chore to get through.

And I copy that on “solid footing”.

Owww....

Nah... get it down to something between a 1/4 inch and an onionhead... doesn't hurt at all... But then, the shears are sharp (like any blade should be). And most of that is in the summer, so it is kinda short to start with... After the heat of summer is off, it all grows until spring... Pony tail and a braid-able beard. Then either my beard is mashing up my nose on the pillow (which I cannot stand), or it gets too hot, and off it comes again.

If there’s something ickier than prickly stubble on the back and chest, I don’t know what it is.

If you’re a model and absolutely have to be smooth, get electrolysis, for heaven’s sake!

*snicker*

I can just see you and my husband with a tankard of beer, snarling over a roaring fire, with the remains of your kill (that you took down with nothing more than a spear and perhaps a large stone) sizzling over the flames...

STOP SHAVING. BE WONDERFUL FUZZY BEASTS. YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED OT BE HAIRLESS WOMEN OR PRE-PUBESENT INFANTS.

You’re supposed to kill things and take things and be harry... dammit. You are male. Enjoy that.

Lord knows, we appreciate it.

Yup. Or wax. At least it grows out soft that way. Never liked hairless men. Seems juvenile to me.

Some guys are just hairier than others. My #2 son got the Indian genes from his grandfather - dark brown skin, almost hairless. Okay, that’s him. But if that’s not you (generic male you), either leave your body hair as-is, or wear a good, sturdy, t-shirt to bed.

Okay...I don’t know how we got here, but I don’t shave anything but my face and throat.

A discussion about back and chest hair/stubble leaves me feeling a little, uhm....lost.

Apparently you ladies have some opinions about this.

Men who shave with safety razors are little sissy girls. Gillette should issue a coupon for 25% off a new dress with each 11-pack of Fusion Proglide safety razors.

Hey! I can see us doing that!

But I would be TOTES clean-shaven!

No shock here. Just making sure to keep good notes.

Hey, from the bottom of my throat, I’m a hairy beast...uhm...down.
