Does Abstinence Education Violate Human Rights? Teen Forces School To Dump Christian Sex Ed
inquistir ^ | staff

A teen in Alberta, Canada, was forced to sit through a sex education class taught by a Christian group, a class that she says advocated abstinence and included such teachings as “condoms don’t work” and “gonorrhea can kill you in three days,” among other examples of flagrant misinformation. So Emily Dawson and her mother Kathy filed a human rights complaint against the Edmonton Public School Board.

The board has now dumped the Christian group that taught the abstinence education class, the Edmonton Pregnancy Care Center, an anti-abortion activist group. The group says that what it teaches in the class is “science and research based.”

But that’s not how Emily saw the course, which is taught by the Christian group to about 60 Edmonton schools each year.

“She did a lot of slut-shaming to the women, and pointed out the guys as horn-dogs,” Emily, now 18 and no longer in high school, says of the course’s instructor. “She really ridiculed single-parent families, she made it sound like they all give birth to juvenile delinquents.”

“She really ridiculed single-parent families, she made it sound like they all give birth to juvenile delinquents.”

Statistically, they do. See "African-American Crime Statistics" for reference.

Didn’t the United Nations (which has plenty of it’s own sex scandals abusing children, running sex rings, prostitution rings, and rapes by ambassadors and peace keepers) put some language in their RIGHTS OF THE CHILD to determine sexual identity and a right to engage in sexual activity (age of consent laws be damned)?

Who says abstinence is exclusively a Christian idea?
It seems pretty common sense to me.

Question authority, like the “authority” that put this unqualified into the “human rights” column.

“hey don’t touch that stove.”

“you’re violating my human rights.”

She said that when a classmate posed a question to the abstinence education teacher about same-sex relationships, the teacher responded, “We’re not here to discuss that,” and refused to answer.

"Abstain from that too!"

1. Condoms don’t always work. Even if they might when used correctly, they are used correctly infrequently by teens.

2. There is a new drug resistant form of gonorrhea can kill in a matter of days.

3. Single parent families have a much higher incidence of juvenile delinquency and other problems.

What’s wrong with the course? It tells you, “No”?

Sex education that gives erroneous information in order to advance an ideology should be rejected. There is nothing wrong with abstinence based sex ad provided it deals with facts and the very legit reasons for abstaining. Scare tactics just invite contempt and challenges.

Honestly except for the baisc biology I don’t think sex ed belongs in schools at all. Because sex ed without a moral dimension fails to acknowledge that sex involves the whole person, not just their naughty bits. Since one persons “forbidden” is another person’s “great!” sex ed should be left to the parents and they can instill their values as they see fit.

Can you provide more details about that?

“Condoms aren’t reliable/don’t work” is a common claim of people insisting that medical plans include ALL forms of contraception, yet when a conservative group makes the same claim, it is called “misinformation.”

Also.... keep in mind that this news article’s characterization of a hostile party’s characterization of the Christian sexuality education program should not be taken at face value.

If you Google on "STD death in days" you will get all sorts of hits.

https://www.google.com/search?q=STD+death+in+days&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb

However...
From the Center for Disease Control

http://www.cdc.gov/std/gonorrhea/Resistant-Gonorrhea-Press.htm

Recent Press Coverage about Drug Resistant Gonorrhea May 8, 2013 Several recent news stories reporting cases of the H041 strain of gonorrhea in the United States are inaccurate. The H041 strain referenced in many of these news articles refer to a case detected in Japan several years ago. The H041 strain has not been detected since then, and was never reported in the United States. CDC is, however, concerned about the threat of drug resistant gonorrhea and continues to raise awareness on this important public health issue, but it is critical to remember that currently-recommended treatment regimens remain effective in the United States. For information about gonorrhea and recommended treatment regimens, please see CDC’s fact sheet on the topic: http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/docs/Gonorrhea-Treatment-Guidelines-FactSheet.pdf Adobe PDF file.

From the CDC:

To date, no patients have failed treatment with either cefixime or ceftriaxone in the United States. However, a small but growing number of cefixime treatment failures have been observed in other countries. This information, coupled with past experience and the latest U.S. surveillance data, suggest that it is only a matter of time before gonorrhea becomes resistant to the only remaining treatments currently available.

Nasty.

I’m sure all these statements are completely accurate. After all, teenagers never use hyperbole to get their point across. /sarcasm
