Why Aren't There More Gay People?
The Federalist ^ | July 21, 2014 | Robert Tracinski

Posted on 07/22/2014 4:41:56 AM PDT by right-wing agnostic

I have a sensitive, inconvenient, and undoubtedly politically incorrect question: Why aren’t there more gay people?

I ask because there’s something confusing about our “culture war.” Given the prominence of the issue, you would expect homosexuality to be rampant in America. When asked to estimate how many gay people there are, most people guess that it’s on the order of 20% to 25% of the population. But yet another study has been released by the CDC giving a more scientific estimate, and it finds that almost 97 percent of Americans describe themselves as straight — the actual number who describes themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual is 2.3%. So the public’s perception is off by a whole order of magnitude.

It’s almost as if someone has been conspiring to elevate this issue way beyond its actual cultural significance. That is precisely what we find, and both sides are to blame.

For the moderate left, gay rights have to be magnified as a social issue because they want to keep alive the legacy of the civil rights movement. They know how much they gained by remaking the Democratic Party, the home of the old Dixiecrats, into the party that claims exclusive credit for the entire civil right movement—while smearing Republicans as racists. Their exaggeration of the culture war over homosexuality is partly an attempt find a new civil rights movement to fight over so they can maintain a manufactured moral high ground.

this statement doesn't make much sense. Worrying about gay marriage is worrying about plain old regular marriage because gay marriage is being used to subvert regular marriage.

Fewer people are engaging in regular marriage, and I don't think it has anything to do with gay marriage.

An increasing number of guys have lost interest in marriage because they don't want to be sodomized by the divorce courts.

The data suggests that the number of people experimenting with homosexuality (bisexuals) has exploded 300%... but still is a small number (1.1% among young adults compared to .3% among middle-aged adults.) Either that, or most bisexuals go straight.

Most of the bisexuals are women. I'm guessing that young women are more likely to "experiment" with another woman.

Good job exploring the implications of the data. What you observed seems similar to what I said above: that the percentage of “gays” is stable, but the percentage who engage in homosexual behavior at least on occasion is considerably greater and seems to be increasing.

1. That's no way to reproduce.

That's relevant only if you posit a genetic cause for homosexuality.

The Regnerus study looked at adult children raised in same sex households. It found that these kids fared far worse than kids raised by a mother and father, and that they were far more likely to experiment with homosexuality, more likely to become gay.

The left mandates that I believe in the big bang theory and the theory of evolution, and then they expect me to believe that a gene that can’t procreate is going to somehow survive....

No positing going on over here. Just suggesting that male/male and female/female don’t result in a lot of offspring. Zero to be exact. So, it doesn’t matter if there’s a genetic component. There’s no offspring at all to carry or not carry anything. (Although, I don’t believe homosexuality to be genetic, fwiw.)

I would be interested on seeing a study done on the Old Order Amish with regards to homosexuality.

The Old Order Amish is a very closed society AND they keep excellent records going back centuries detailing various issues with a person (these records have been used by researchers to look into the genetics of a number of medical and mental conditions). Particularly, they have records of why individuals were expelled through shunning.

Such a study could address the following hypotheses:

1. Marriage (including a high degree of inbreeding) and reproduction are essentially required among the Amish. Were homosexual tendencies to be genetic (regardless of whether or not the person acted upon them), you would expect a HIGHER degree of this among the Amish than in the general population.

2. If homosexuals are simply "born that way" the detailed records of punishments and shunnings would demonstrate this.

3. Finally, if homosexuality is simply a choice, and more importantly a choice that is pushed through entertainment and public schools, the Amish can easily demonstrate this. Because they have little or no exposure to modern media, and they are educated in their own schools, and they are subject to a strict moral code, the absence of homosexuals among the Amish would tend to suggest that it is actually either a choice or a mental illness.

You’re right, wagglebee, that would be an interesting study, particularly in the light it could shed on the genetic hypothesis. There could also be information gained about some possible environmental factors, such as food additives or consumption of soy products, as well as family environments.

I believe it. I believe that they all would be happier.

Homosexuality is obviously unnatural. Whatever you want to call it - disease / disorder / etc. For their own sake and for society’s sake these people need to be treated.

The same thing applies to any type of sexual deviant. Whether it be bestiality, anal intercourse, pedophilia, homosexuality or other perversion. They are responsible for their actions, but it is important that we be compassionate and realize that they are suffering from a mental disease.

Indeed, you will notice the 3% dominate 40% of the programming on TV.

A few decadesa ago while rushing into a roadside rest stop for an emergency pit stop, I came upon two gentlemen engaged in what could be called homosexual behavior. I won't go into details but one was standing and one was kneeling as they faced each other. Upon my entrance one guy zipped up his pants, and sped out of the rest stop at supersonic speed. The other guy retreated into a stall.

I didn't waste a lot of time hanging around and left as quick as I could considering the circumstances. I later found out that many roadside rest stops were popular meeting places for male homosexuals, and the state law enforcement agencies conducted stings on a number of them. I guess you could call that my homosexual encounter. I am now very wary when I visit one of these places and I see vehicles already parked.

Because being a homosexual cuts your life span in half.

The number of people that have had a homosexual encounter is closer to 30%.

To arrive at that number, I'm guessing "encounter" is very loosely defined to the point of being silly.

describe themselves as straight

Just like the gay hating Muslims who practice homosexuality but say that aren't gay because they don't "love" the guy/child their screwing.

I still believe that the number of homosexuals in the population is quite low, but saying something doesn't make it true.

I’m guessing looking at that picture just qualified as a homosexual encounter.
