Chrome is throwing false 'Malware' detection for Free Republic
7/29/2014

Posted on 07/29/2014 6:51:20 AM PDT by Lazamataz

I no longer use Microsoft Internet Explorer, MS has pretty much destroyed that product. I now use Google Chrome.

This morning, on two separate computers, Chrome has thrown a false malware warning for Free Republic (the pings url, to be specific). Apparently, 'secretsofthefed.com' is defined as a Malware site, and somehow, my pings has that in the list somewhere. Thusly, it is throwing a Malware lockout. You can get past it, but it is annoying and unnecessary, and would prevent less-savvy users from going to FR.

This MAY be happening only for those users who happen to have that website (www.secretsofthefed.com) cited in their ping list, or it may be for everyone. We shall see.

This is just a heads up service for anyone getting this result, and a technical note for the administration here.

My main online employer’s website will only run on Chrome, so it is either that or go on the dole, though I don’t use it for anything else.

Most of these systems depend on user reports. As a consequence liberal scum get together and keep reporting websites they don’t like.

Sounds like something we conservative scum should do. :)

You forgot to mention the auto-notify message Google sends to the NSA when you attempt to visit said hate sites.

Oh...you didn’t know that?

:-)

I know. Trend Micro has started doing this to me too. I assumed it was banner ads but there are none here. Do you have other tabs open?

Using Chrome is not, IMHO, a good idea. What wrong with Firefox or Opera?

Sounds like someone does NOT want us going to ‘secretsofthefed.com’.

Interesting. Look for the website publisher and author to have a sudden heart attack, though he is healthy as a bull, 38 years old, never smokes, jogs every few days, etc. etc. etc.

Well then, for Pete's sake, come over here and you can have the ones that keep getting into my house! I'll give you and the objects of your affection total privacy.

Thanks for the warning, sweet friend.

In my opinion, Chrome is almost malware itself. All sorts of crap is added to your computer if you load Chrome.

Uninstall chrome, deleting all files and settings. Install / run Malwarebytes (free trial) and quarantine everything it finds. Ununstall any remaining software discovered by Malwarebytes using the control panel or any uninstall that came with it. In the control pannel’s internet options, empty the cache then click the advanced tab and reset Internet Explorer to it’s defaults. Delete all your temporary files and any remaining chrome folders. Install Microsoft Security Essentials (free) or AVG free. Turn on the Windows firewall and remove unwanted exceptions. Download and install Chrome again. Swear at the computer. Take a walk to relieve your stress.

Wouldn’t be happening on the computer at work, too, though. I cannot specify why I know this to be true.

Neither Chrome nor the latest Chromium build show any malware warning for FreeRepublic. I do get a malware warning for secretsofthefed.com, a site I haven't heard of before.

Here's the Google Safe Browsing report for the secretsofthefed.com site, giving the reasons for the malware report. At the bottom are steps the site owner can take to request a review of the site after the problems are fixed.

I copied and pasted www.secretsofthefed.com to my browser and got the warning after going there.

Hotlinking would trigger it. Freerepublic.com isn’t the issue, it’s the hotlink to secretsofthefed.com.

Hmmm. That's bloody odd.

When I tried to use firefox on the other computer, it generated a malware warning as well, although Opera shows it no worries. Running Ghostery and Adblock Plus on both browsers, but firefox displays the warning and the following if you tell it to ignore the warning and then click on the tab that appears above the site "This isn't an attack site..."

-which takes you to a site (new tab) labeled as StopBadware, Inc (stopbadware.org) that states at the top: Google detected badware on the site you were visiting. Firefox uses Google's blacklist to warn you about "Reported attack sites." We understand that you may know and trust this site, but it's possible for good sites to be infected with badware without the site owners' knowledge or permission.

Looks like google is the troubling source in this instance.

As a side note, sometime between when I posted to Laz and this post, whenever I tried to reply on this thread (to Eaker and Laz, the two I tried) the Reply To click instead reloaded the entire page, after which I was able to reply as this shows.

A bit strange.

Oh, and Opera on this machine and the other shows no problem loading the secretsofthefed.com website, again running in Linux.
