WICHITA, KS (KCTV) - Lady has had a tough life in recent months, but a Florida heiress who loves animals is vowing to make the lab's golden years truly happy.

Lab gets fairytale ending after 2 families reject dog Lady is getting use to her new home in Florida after a wealthy heiress rescued her from a Kansas shelter. Lady's story is worthy of a Hollywood movie. The grizzled black lab made national headlines when she walked 30 miles to return home to owners who had given her up and refused to take her back.

As word spread on social media, heartbroken dog fans swamped the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter telephone line as they sought to adopt the older dog.

After learning of her plight, Wrigley Gum heiress Helen Rich Rosburg flew a private jet to Kansas on Thursday to whisk the dog to her Florida sanctuary for neglected animals.

Breaks my heart.

While jogging this morning, a big, well fed, well groomed tan color Lab raced by me on one of the trails east of Seattle.

Obviously lost, obviously in a panic.

Looked like it had an ID collar, but it wouldn’t even turn to look when I called and ran after him.

That’s made me feel sad all day.

Now a story like this - ouch!

“...talk about startling!”

And the squirrel too. “What - no peanuts?”

“I’m still not over it although I got another rescue dog within the month.”

We can relate. What happened to her isn’t uncommon with the older ones. Heartbreaker!

Good for you getting another rescue dog. There’s usually nothing more loving than a rescue mutt.

Null and Void raised a tiny baby squirrel to adolescence, if not adulthood. His name was Mr. Flibble, at least it was until near the time SHE was released into the wild.

Does she do as much for people?

I had to give my dogs away when I was a 15. For some reason, even after all these years, I still have a hole inside from that.

It's a relief that this story has a somewhat happy ending. Excuse me, I have to go hug my dogs now.

I’d walk 30 miles for my dog.

These two wonderful senior German shepherds were abandoned when their owners moved. Fortunately a neighbor saved them and they came to our rescue two months ago.

Nina and Rocky are going home tomorrow to previous adopters.

Dogs well cared for like that - there’s a high probability that the owners will make a maximum effort to find her.

What are you implying? If you want to make a case that she should, or that somehow if she doesn’t it demeans her effort to help animals, spell it out - if you can.

That is one of the saddest stories I have ever read.

If it hadn’t turned out well..I would be devastated.

I hope so.

A couple years ago I may have seen the same dog about half a mile away on the same trail near some luxury homes.

I’m thinking backyard “escape artist.”

But this is time different.

Today, between him and those homes, there are two forks in the trail, and he has to correctly choose both times.

On the bright side, it’s an affluent area with many dog lovers, so, when he calms down a little, I know some caring person will get a look at his collar.

An entertaining photo. If it was to dress up and have a fun photo-shoot, I’m with it. If it is the “Jeeves, I’d like to wear the blue outfit today, and make sure you polish the knee pads better - yesterday they were a tad scuffed for my 9:37 ride” type of thing - no thanks!

Wrigley Heiress, Helen Rosburg, and granddaughter of chewing gum industrialist William Wrigley, learned of Morales’s plea to get his dogs from California to North Carolina and decided to help.

“He was going to lose his dogs and I said ‘Not on my watch,’” Rosburg ABC Affiliate WWAY. “He’s a hero on so many different levels. The Wrigleys are an extremely patriotic family and I am a true Wrigley child.”

Rosburg charted a private plane and flew the Morales family along their two large pets to North Carolina.
