The 2014 Friendliest (and Unfriendliest) Cities in the World
Conde Nash Traveler ^ | August 7, 2014 | Staff

This year’s list of friendliest (and unfriendliest) cities in the U.S., as chosen by Condé Nast Traveler readers, boasted a lot of Southern hospitality and big-city chilliness, but what do you get when you widen the list to include the whole world? The results may surprise you.

I live in Charleston but am not a native.
Do you expect a native Charlestonian to greet a bunch of yankees with “marry my daughter”?

Here in Savannah, we made the top Ten (not shown in the orignal post, but, in the slide show).

Come to Savannah and spend money. We promise to be very friendly as long as you spend money. :D

This is a fairly accurate list. I would replace Charleston with New Orleans. Also I disagree with Victoria BC. People from Canada generally will act friendly to your face, but when your back is turned they will say insulting things about you. Very much unlike Aussies who will not only be friendly in person, but they will go out of their way to say nice things about you and help you even after you’ve left the room.

These slide shows are common because they make money with each click.

The French are pretty rude, sorry. They don’t do it to be mean, that is the way their culture is. You find exceptions to this, but as a rule they live in their own world and ignore everyone else around them.

Johannesburg?

ROTFLMAO! !!!

Sheesh! I’d be deathly afraid of being shot by some guy with no legs.

Johannesburg is really a very dangerous place.

Ironic though, that southerners generally have massively superior attitudes, while demanding that yanks respect their humidity and cream gravy.

Yeah, well those top 10 made the list only because Mahalasville, Indiana, was disqualified in order to keep it fair.

"Ironic though, that southerners generally have massively superior attitudes,"

No. You must be confused...or unfamiliar with our region and its people.

" while demanding that yanks respect their humidity and cream gravy."

What a strange thing to say. I hate humidity and cream gravy. I never heard of a Southerner "demanding" anyone else like them.

No, I’m not confused in the least. I’ve lived in the south for years, and everything, especially egos, being bigger is not confined to Texas.

Yes, I can see why you're having a problem with Southerners, who are some of the friendliest people on the planet. Here's a hint: it's not us.

No, its definitely you guys. Southerners in general seem to see no inconsistency with crapping all over the north, deriding Yankees and holding Yankees in general in contempt, and yet demanding unqualified respect for the south. More than once I've had southerners insult Vermont to my face, and literally hit the roof when I retaliated with a similiar comment about their state. There are jerks everywhere, but the south is the only place I've been that claims to have none. There are friendly people everywhere, but the south is the only place that claims to have nothing but.

As far as friendliness, the south isn't much different than the north these days. In my experience the most genuinely friendly, big-hearted people are westerners, particularly northwesterners (disregarding Seattle.)

Sorry, but I can't take you seriously with the hyperbolic---and one hundred percent false---claims you're throwing around.

Southerners "demand" people like cream gravy and humidity.

Southerners claim there are no "jerks" in the south.

You do have one thing right, though...the friendliness of the South is on the wane these days. Why do you think that's the case? I can tell you. I live in central rural Virginia, and I've seen the atmosphere of cordiality decrease as more and more Yankees move in.

As for your own personal pain, suffering, and general sense of being put-upon, I have a solution for you.

Leave.

I must say this in defense of NYC. Every year for @ half a century I’ve trekked thru the city by train or by bus en route to visit relatives in the region. Always have a suitcase packed for 2 weeks.

Maybe twice in all those years I’ve had to carry my own bag from Point A to Point B. All other times, some NYer has come along and offered to help carry my bag up or down subways stairs, across the street, whatever.

Those folks have also covered the demographic gamut: men-women/young-old/white-black-Hispanic-Asian. I am continually amazed. And grateful! IMO, NYers get a bum rap.

Your getting into a tizzy and blaming some of the problems with the south I mentioned on the dreaded Yankee.

I'm sure it was the best, friendliest place on earth, before those dratted, unfriendly Yankees showed up. Or perhaps there have always been unfriendly people in the south, like everywhere else.

And actually, I did leave. But don't breath a sigh of relief, I may well come back.

No, just expressing surprise that the unfriendliest city I've ever visited made the top 5 of the Conde Nast friendly list.

On the bright side, I did buy a black “I love Houston” long sleeve t-shirt that my wife wears to bed when it is cold.
