Robin Williams’ close friend reveals actor resented having to do new Mrs Doubtfire

Robin Williams resented having to work on films such as the second Mrs Doubtfire but felt compelled in order to keep money coming in, a close friend of the actor has told the Telegraph.

Williams, who had been working on four projects when he was believed to have taken his own life this week, was said to have been dreading making more films as they "brought out his demons".

He had committed to starring in sequels to the hugely successful Mrs Doubtfire and Night in the Museum, as well as comedy Merry Friggin’ Christmas, and the drama Boulevard.

But according to his neighbour and friend of over a decade, he no longer wanted to work on films as he felt they were not conducive to his mental well-being.

"Robin had promised himself he would not do any more as he invested so much in his roles that it left him drained and particularly vulnerable to depressive episodes,” the friend told the paper.

"He signed up to do them purely out of necessity. He wasn’t poor, but the money wasn’t rolling in any more and life is expensive when you have to pay off two ex-wives and have a family to support.”

His friend, who declined to be named, said he last saw the actor three weeks ago when the two of them went on one of their regular bike rides around their hometown of Tiburon just north of San Francisco.

Torchy was portrayed by 3 different actresses but mostly by Glenda Farrell.... but the last one she was played by Jane Wyman (Reagan's first wife)

Good for your son. A good financial planner can help families live better and make a good living at it as well.

My grandfather used to employ about half of a small town in East Texas back in the 30’s to the 60’s. He would pay the wives on Monday morning. In cash. Interesting thing was that he walked through town with a lot of cash on payday. Everyone knew that he had a lot of cash on him, but nobody tried to rob him.

However IF he was bipolar, a symptom of it is poor money management especially during high manic episodes.

As someone raised by a bipolar parent, I know exactly what you speak of. I watched countless times as my mother blew through money, maxing out credit cards, on silly, worthless crap only to crash when her manic stage passed and become terribly ashamed and depressed.

I believe Williams was clinically bipolar. Just watching him perform is testament to this. Now that he has taken his life, anecdotes attributed to classic bipolar personality are surfacing from everyone who knew him.

People ask, "how could he be depressed when he was so rich, successful and famous?" His brain wasn't wired right, that's how and asking this question is just as absurd as asking "how could he get cancer when he was so rich, successful and famous?"

True depression isn't just being down in the dumps. It's not just being sad. It is a clinical illness, just like cancer, just like diabetes and it can affect anyone regardless of fame, wealth or success. I think the one silver lining of Williams' suicide is that his death may bring attention and awareness to the very real ailment of manic depression and bipolar personality.

These movie stars take their jobs too seriously. Jason Robards said “All you have to do is memorize your lines, show up on time and hit your mark.” It ain’t rocket science.

What if the husband is physically abusive? What if the husband has cheated on his wife throughout the marriage?

RE: He could’ve done a 3-6 month stint in Vegas. How tough would that have been?

Speaking of Vegas... Wayne Newton was one of those who came full circle.

He made lots of money, lost almost all of them, filed for bankruptcy, and then made it all back... IN VEGAS.

The don’t call him Mr. Las Vegas for nothing.

And they don’t plan for the day when the income dries up.

Everybody in acting should know that the cycle goes from ingenue to diva/prima donna to grandparent characters. You can't stay young forever.

Lots of people likely aren’t always thrilled about getting out of bed every day to feed their families and pay their bills. Welcome the the world.

Well you could set a maximum alimony equal to the 75% percentile of household income. And a cap of $12,000/yr per child should be sufficient.

If they just adjusted the payments periodically, based on actual income, it would help.

I respectfully disagree. I believe everything you listed were means by which he coped with those demons. I think the demons would have been there even if he had none of those three. I believe he was mentally ill. I suspect he was bipolar. It would explain a lot.

Shaking my head. Why people would be so cruel at what is probably the worst time of her life is beyond me.

What if the husband is physically abusive? What if the husband has cheated on his wife throughout the marriage?

In a fair world, if the wife cheated with a succession of bums, she would get nothing, and the husband would get full custody of the kids.

In the real world, she gets the kids, the house, child support and alimony. In the real world, the husband pays child support EVEN IF THE KIDS ARE NOT BIOLOGICALLY HIS.
