I started very young in the family business. There are few men alive, and I mean very few who have done what I and the men I worked with did. There is no way I could impart what knowledge I have because the techniques we used, while dangerous at times, are no longer legal. How can you past on to a child when the hardest work he has ever done is riding a lawn mower, the concept that the work we did was like a daily IQ test, if you survived the day you passed, if you died you failed, the more common view then was when it is your time to go, it is your time to go and there is nothing you can do about it. How do you pass that fatalistic view on and would you even want to?

How do you pass on the idea that any work is honorable in this day and these times, when gaudy excess is considered something to aspire to?

I blame my generation for the useless offspring wandering around with toy phones because we raised their parents and gave them things they did not earn. I am a boomer and most of what is wrong with this country is our selfish fault. Someone my age told me that we were the greatest generation, and she was serious. I did set her straight and I am sure it did no good. We were, as a group, the most foolish generation this country ever produced with the exception of our half wit children and grandchildren, not all, there are exceptions but as a group.

It was nasty of you to hand her the 15-lb ax maul.

But, just like with Mr. Colt, there is an equalizer:

After raising her kids she became a Midwife and delivered over 200 kids, they don't make them like that anymore.

"They" still make kids in the same way, believe me.

Some of us can handle a spider. Maybe, if its not too ugly or fast.

I hope you wake up at age 75 totally alone.

There seems to be some emotion in your post. Is this something you fear?

I think you may be a little confused. Mind telling me exactly what you meant?

When my kids say, “There’s a spider in the house!” I reply, “Nice! Give it name, make it a friend.”

I think I understand it well and do not feel threatened by a self reliant woman. Matter of fact, I like em. Seemed she had a sense of humor, something you might want to work on.

That’s good to know.

Funny...come to think of it now I remember reading about a similar technique in Swiss family Robinson, using something like a bicycle pump.

I’m married to a self reliant woman, but she never makes such inane comments.

I strongly encourage marriage as a Christian and with staying together until death, as most peoples’ vows state.

However, I fail to understand your animosity towards this lady, whom we do not know of as a “man hater” or anything that would validate your venomous words toward her.

My wife has butchered over a dozen different animals and can do a decent job fixing up computers. She’s also a former management consultant who walked the most senior persons at a number of top corporations how to use the Balanced Scorecard method. I have more education than she does, but she is definitely my equal or better in some areas, and I’m fine with that. I am definitely her equal or better in other useful areas.

Her skills do not detract from mine—they complement them. I was the Boy Scout, but she took classes on butchering.

When a woman can overcome what might be her fears of performing something that a guy might normally do, this is a good thing.

Heck, I sometimes cook and (rarely) hand sew my clothes, but I don’t hold any animosity toward my wife for her successes. I have my own in areas she has little knowledge of (at least at this time).

Leave this lady alone until you find a valid reason to despise her. Be glad for her growth in an area you and I are already skilled in.

There’s room enough for everyone to know how to prepare wood.

Take a chill pill, man. If you lived in Nome, Alaska, wouldn’t you expect all of those persons to know how to do the most fundamental things to survive? That is all this is talking about.

Go live in the Arctic Circle and see how happy you’d be if your wife couldn’t occasionally bring back the wood.

I do not understand the animosity this thread is bringing out.

When I hear your words, I think they’re beautiful!

This thread is showing latent hostilities from some of the men here I would not have thought would have had a problem.

When a woman to get past her fears to help her family survive—this is a truly good thing. There’s not a single shred of sanity in these negative posts. It’s obvious this lady has a sense of humor and is talking to other women who can understand.

Apparently, many men in this thread feel threatened by a woman saying she can now cut her own wood.
