A $22 product designed to protect the most sacred of things when flying –- personal space -– led to an unscheduled landing in Chicago during a flight from Newark to Denver.
Two passengers aboard the diverted United Airlines flight got into a heated argument Sunday after a male passenger used the product, the Knee Defender, to prevent the woman in the row in front from reclining her seat.
The man, who was not identified, placed the Knee Defender’s brackets on his tray table attached to the back of the seat in front of him, 11B.
The female passenger seated in 11B became angry over not being able to recline her seat and reportedly threw a cup of water in the man’s face.

I’m with you. At 6 foot 2 I can’t fly with the person leaning back on my knees.
That said, society has deteriorated to the point that people can’t handle minor issues respectfully without having to be told by the government what to do.
And diverting a flight over it?
Come on! Am I the only one that thinks that response is a tad overkill?
Surely so,evoke with a cool head could bring common sense to the situation and everyone move on.

What if the 6'4" guy in the seat in front of you is scrunched in because the person in front of him reclined his seat too? Is he supposed to suck it up to give you more room?
Reclining seats were designed to be used when they didn’t cram 400 people onto a 737 originally designed to carry no more than 80 passengers. They just crammed another 50 or more seats onto the same airplane and just to piss people off even more, they kept the recliners.
It is damned rude to recline your seat so that your hair is falling onto the lap of the guy behind you.
Yes, anyone who reclines their seat should be turned over to ISIS for a proper beheading.
I wonder if “Knee Defender” has nice, smooth, rounded edges so that it doesn’t cause damage or pain when the passenger in the seat in front of you transforms it into “Involuntary Buttplug”?
It appears that you have to lower your tray in order to use the knee defender.
And after this story became public, it looks like kneedefender.com is being overwhelmed by traffic.

My, showing a whole lot of hostility there, aren’t you. As long as there are reclining seats on airplanes, they are meant to be used for reclining. If you are uncomfortable with the person, male or female (this isn’t a gender thing, you know, although who knows, maybe to you it is), then don’t get on an airplane with rows close together. It’s your problem, not the person sitting in front of you. You aren’t recliner dictator for life, you know.
I have to wonder what the FAA thinks of these devices. I would certainly request to move to another seat if someone next to me started installing a modification that holds the tray in the down position. Worse, it looks like the devices can only be removed by a key - quick, we’re about to go down into the ocean, please find the key to remove these devices that make it harder for me to leave the plane before it sinks...
For those who desire knee room, please choose seats right behind the emergency exit rows on the wings. Those seats do not recline, and virtually every airline lets you pick your particular seats these days. Or even better yet, choose an airline that gives you the right amount of legroom.
Yes, I never threw a fit over it, nor would I. Diverting a flight over that is insane. Like you said, society has become pitiful.
You want leg room? Your leg room is in the overhead compartment now.
Don’t tall people know that there are seats available to them on the plane with the extra room?
I am 6’ 4” as well. It is broads like that limit my flying to about one trip per year. And I pay extra for the seat with no one in front of me.
She shouldn’t have thrown water in his face. He would have been justified in retaliating by throwing acid in her face, but he probably didn’t have any and it’s hard to get any during a flight.
Problems like this are why I fly on the outside of the airplane. There is no host service, but I have plenty of room to lay back.
An airline should have a policy that will give everyone reasonable comfort. If not, we will goto an airline that does.

LOL, that’s funny. My solution is to just not fly.
