A $22 product designed to protect the most sacred of things when flying –- personal space -– led to an unscheduled landing in Chicago during a flight from Newark to Denver.

Two passengers aboard the diverted United Airlines flight got into a heated argument Sunday after a male passenger used the product, the Knee Defender, to prevent the woman in the row in front from reclining her seat.

The man, who was not identified, placed the Knee Defender’s brackets on his tray table attached to the back of the seat in front of him, 11B.

The female passenger seated in 11B became angry over not being able to recline her seat and reportedly threw a cup of water in the man’s face.

I didn’t know a seat on an airplane would recline more than two inches.

You aren’t recliner dictator for life, you know.

That's true, but I have it on good authority that people who rudely recline their seats onto the laps the the people behind them in Coach are going to end up in Hell.

To many of the people posting about the lack of seat room -—

Sorry folks, but this one is on us.

There was a time (70s, early 80s) when airlines actually tried to make comfort and seat room a real factor in travel. And what happened? Low cost carriers crammed people in like sardines, and took over the market.

While many would be happy to see a true service and comfort airline emerge, too many would still go to some cut rate service to find the lowest possible fare - even if they had to be crammed together like refugees.

I can’t fly anymore. Have developed such an aversion to people that 3 or 4 empty seats, at a minimum, have to surround me in any kind of conveyance or theater, etc. (other than family). Prefer to sit in my own otherwise empty row.

Yes, I am quite well aware of the extra legroom available for certain seats. The thing is: you are expected to be able to assist fellow passengers in the event of an emergency (difficult in my physical condition), AND you pay extra for self-selected seating.

My seat goes back when the person in front me reclines. There is nothing rude about it.

This incident occurred on United, in the premier seating area.

I am 6'2" travel United and pay the extra to sit in the premier section. The leg room is adequate.

looks like the devices can only be removed by a key

I think the key is there for size comparison. But I would tend to agree - it forces the tray table to be down, which would make evacuation difficult.

LOL, that IS funny, I must admit. Remind me never to be sitting either in front of you or behind you on a plane. If in front, I might be forced to toss a glass of water your way. Or maybe to cheer you up, a glass of wine, white of course, so it won’t stain.

If you are one of those rude people who thinks they own the space behind them so that you fully recline your seat without regard for the comfort and safety of the guy behind you, then you may very well end up in Hell. I knew someone who got a blood clot from sitting in a cramped airline seat and got a blood clot that killed him.

If you are going to recline your seat fully, please be courteous enough to ask the person in whose lap you are planning on resting whether it would be OK if you reclined. Most likely even a claustrophobe like me would not object in that case. What I do object to is those people who do it without any regard for the person behind them.

Personally, I have never reclined more than a couple of inches unless the seat behind me was vacant.

Do unto others.....

I used to figure that if a seat was reclined far into my space, I reserved the right to forcefully, repeatedly, and randomly bump that seat with both hands throughout the duration of the flight. But then, I no longer fly and am quite happy about it.

I’ve never been on a flight for more than 5 hours, and I usually take a nap. I’ve always revlined my seat. I don’t think it’s rude at all.

you are able to get a custom made car. you cannot get a custom made seat on a commercial airplane.
