So glad to see this! Just spent quite a lot of FASCINATING time reading (or skimming) the more than 1,000 comments at this Hollywood Reporter piece by Rivers written in 2012, including recent comments posted after Rivers' death.

The Thather hoax is mentioned by only one commenter as the real reason Carson wouldn't speak with Rivers -- acting playful in the minutes this was aired on live TV, Rivers, who had no clue it was a look-alike stand-in and that she was being made a fool by hidden camera and that it would be aired on national TV, slapped Carson so hard he fell off his stool. They both laughed about it for the cameras, but Rivers was never on Carson's show again, according to this reader comment, and he claimed to have seen it on live TV at the time.

All of that aside -- MANY MANY MANY of the reader comments, from people who have to sign up with Hollywood Reporter to even post a comment, are JUST LIKE FREEPERS in hating Obama and leftism.

If the reader comments for this story at Hollywood Reporter are any indication, there are a HELLUVA LOT MORE conservatives and folks who hate Obama and leftism in Hollywood than we have any idea. Liberals are very much the minority but they have monopoly on much of the MSM. The MSM is a minority of leftists with a megaphone; the majority of Americans are middle or right-minded but their voice is effectively silenced by an MSM that ignores them. Except in reader comments -- that's where you see the real picture.

I found it some of the most refreshing reading I've done in many days.

The reader comments -- and remember that to comment you have to sign up with Hollywood Reporter -- are even more WORTH THE TIME TO READ, or at least to skim.

Look -- feast your eyes, comfort your soul, draw spiritual sustenance and hope -- at ALL of those posts deriding Obama and leftism!!!! Look at the ones that dare to point out that only a short time before her death, Rivers had referred to Michelle Obama as a "tranny" and to Obama as a "fag" in one of her comedy routines and "now she's in a body bag." Much of the "conspiracy" tone was only half tongue-in-cheek.

Hollywood is very apparently a helluva lot more divided between right and left, with a helluva lot more leaning to the right, than is commonly recognized.

Drudge had a link to an essay she wrote about her rift with Johnny Carson. It is worth the time to read.

Read or at least skim the comments at the site you link. It is well worth the investment of the time. There are a LOT of people who hate Obama and who hate leftism who read and comment on the Hollywood Reporter. The stuff about Joan Rivers and Carson is interesting -- MORE interesting and MORE important is that hidden truth -- there are a LOT of folks who lean to the right in Hollywood, a shocking number. But most Americans don't know this because they never take the time to read what their compatriots are saying -- they only take the time to read what the MSM spoon-feeds them.

Interesting. She claimed she did call Carson first, but he hung up on her. Who's telling the truth? Who cares? Carson probably, like virtually every other entertainer, would have jumped at a chance to get his own show. I'm not or never was in show business, but how is that different from any other business? You see your opportunity, and you take it.

While Rivers said she owed her career to Carson, that's not quite true. She was very well known from being on the Ed Sullivan Show. Carson helped her career?...sure, but so what? His snit about her getting her own show was petty.

But few comedians are as funny after 70 as they are before. And there are plenty of musicians still performing after 70. In the last few years I’ve seen performing live Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, and Neil Diamond. They all sounded great, and they were all near or over seventy.

From info I’ve gathered on this site and others like it, most of the Hollywood conservatives are on the technical side of the industry in back of the camera while most of the libs are the performers in front of the camera.

Yep — that may well be true. Illustrating the imbalance in HWood as it is across America’s mainstream news media — a liberal minority has the facetime/megaphone, ultimately creating the illusion of exaggerated size and numbers.

Ms. Rivers’ thighs are now thin.

And it’s a complete lie by joan. A PBS special on Carson addressed this. Joan admitted Carson heard about her offer from fox through the news. She admitted she should have called him to let him know about the deal. When she did call it was too late as JC had heard and he refused to talk to her. She completely dissed the man who helped her career.

Don't forget the master of venom, Don Rickles. The guy is pushing 90 and still has not lost his fastball.

People over the age of 55 still get his comedy. Back in the day you can bust balls and can laugh at yourself at the psuedo tormentor with out getting your panties into a PC tightwad.

Today, the youngsters get offended and want to sue. The old guys take the teasing and laugh and give it back in spades.

We used to call it "ranking out".

There was a strong vein of it with the Borscht Belt and New York Jewish comedians that was so funny.

I had a Jewish friend from New York when we were just starting out in our early 20s and had moved to the big city (I was from the timid and polite South). One day we had eaten lunch in one of those big, busy urban cafeterias, where after eating you put your trays onto a stainless steel shelf at a dishwashing intake window, and drop your silverware into a rubbermaid tub. When she dropped her silverware in, an older man in a nice business suit snorted, "You splashed my sleeve!"

"You got something for nothing, then," she shot back. I thought I'd die stifling a laugh.
