Deer on Golden Gate Bridge Bring Rush Hour Traffic to a Halt (Video)
NBC Bay Area ^ | Saturday, Sep 6, 2014

Call it "Bambi" on the bridge. Reports of a pair of deer hanging out on the Golden Gate Bridge Friday evening sent social media abuzz in the Bay Area. California Highway Patrol officers were called to the bridge, but the deer were already gone by the time they got there. Twitter users reported that traffic stopped moving momentarily, but was soon flowing normally again.

"It was Deer on the Golden Gate Bridge! Hope they are safe! Kind of awesome!" tweeted out Twitter user Rydalia with a picture, which has since gone viral.

This video shot by NBC Bay Area viewer Michael Ortiz of Novato shows deer on the Golden Gate Bridge holding up traffic on a Friday afternoon. "Not a big deal. Just some deer running down the middle of the road on the Golden Gate Bridge," posted Luca Jackson on Instagram.

Instagram user @rebeccaabbey posted this video of the deer scampering across the bridge as cars followed them slowly.

The deer, reported at 5:24 p.m., appear to have entered the bridge from the south, according to CHP Officer Andrew Barclay. They quickly brought the three northbound lanes traffic to a halt behind them as they ran from San Francisco toward Marin.

"They pretty much created their own traffic break," Barclay said. "That could be what saved the deer from getting hurt ... If it was lighter traffic the cars would have been moving faster."

Barclay said it is not the first time animals have been reported on the bridge, but it is the first time it has happened in the two years he has served as a public information officer.

The deer reportedly got off safely on the Marin County side of the bridge. It's unclear whether they had to pay toll.

Nothing a semi-trailer tractor truck rolling along at 65 mph hauling several tons of cargo can’t handle. The deer would become airborne and land right in SF Bay. That would clear traffic in seconds. As for Bambi and friend, fish food. A nice, green, ecological friendly end, no?

That’s easy to believe. I took these off the north end of the bridge a few years ago. It was just yards from being on the roadway.

You're not one of those deer-genocide crazies, are you?

Around here, there are some people who hold the petunia in higher regard than deer. There are the rest of us who are sane. <^..^>

Dislike them is being kind. I’ve had whole gardens destroyed by them, while the neighbors think they’re “cute”. Morons. Had one run into my car as well, luckily not thru the windshield. No need for them. I always thought they should be slaughtered en masse, converted to venison sausage and given to the poor for food. Take care of two problems.

In Northern California, the Deer and the Brown Bear outrank our State Bird as far as Disneyized sentimentality. You would not believe how excited and enthralled most the Bay Area people were about the Deer on G.G.Bridge moment. It was talked about on the radio for hours.

You don’t want to be the careless driver who would dare to ‘harrass’ the Deer by using your car bumper to gently herd or goad them into hurrying up. Woe be to the one who (gasp!) actually hits one or both Deer. I guarantee, you would be well known and infamous in this area by the next hour. The status of your employment just might be effected by the Twitterverse.

My father-in-law was a great hunter.

I remember visting him when he was very sick and dying. The TV was on, and he didn’t say a word until, for whatever reason, a picture came on of a very nice deer.

He looked at the TV and said “Bang.”

I think that was the last time I spoke to him.

Anyway, whenever I see a deer on the TV I always say “Bang.”

Some low-level civil servant in the California Highway Dept. is gonna get a severe reprimand for failing to post adequate “Deer Crossing” signage on the approaches to the bridge to let the deer know which lane(s) they were supposed to use.

Of course, Californians would be worried about the deer and not the people who could have been killed but whatever.

Two deer go into a gay bar in San Francisco.
A couple hours later they come out and one deer say to the other, “I can’t believe I blew 30 bucks in there.”

The deer who frolic in this neighborhood are wonderful creatures. They mind their manners, many look both ways before they cross the street, and enjoy being near us friendlies. There are people who've found ways to stop the deer from sampling their garden, only to find out it's the CHIPMUNKS who have no respect.

I wish some of the parents around here were as good at parenting as the does are with their fawns. Do I talk to the deer? Yeah, sometimes. <^..^>
