The U.S. public health establishment buries overwhelming evidence that abstinence is a cause of heart disease and early death. People deserve to know that alcohol gives most of us a higher life expectancy—even if consumed above recommended limits.

While there is evidence very moderate alcohol consumption has some health benefits, drinking beyond that is deadly. There is a long long list of health risks and diseases caused by alcohol consumption. Millions upon millions of deaths from alcohol. Add to that the violence, destruction of families, suicides, and the deaths and injuries from drunk drivers, alcohol is not a healthy thing to consume.

I never understood the obsession with alcohol. It even tastes awful. I won’t ingest something that tastes bad.

Try Scotch on the rocks for a real test.

” it kills brain cells. Even one drink.”

You are treading very close to the claims made by the Washingtonians of the late 1800’s, I think around 1870. They were a well organized Temberance lobbby group that figured out that they needed to indoctrinate students at public schools and eventually, they could make alcohol consumption illegal.

They had included stories that “even one drink” has caused people to “immediately combust into a blue flame.”

It would have been so comical, had they not been so successful and had that not lead to such progressivism of today.....

Learn your limits (both low and high) and don’t exceed them except on occasion. Repeated abuse of anything will kill you, so learn your limits. And remember, different people have different limits. It’s just my opinion but other factors also affect our ability to drink alcohol. The foods we eat also influence the consumption of alcohol.

Genetics enable some people to go to expanded limits you or I could never attempt. For instance, British cuisine is rather bland to most normal people. After a few drinks it tastes OK. You don’t have to be British to enjoy the spotted dick and blood pudding, but it helps.

Sometimes you have to develop an immunity first. Scotch whiskey and sheep hagis come to mind. After the immune system is compromised, it is healthy and taste good in a strange way. After the first drink, the “old sweat socks” aroma will fade away. A few more and you fade away too.

Lastly, it takes years of pacing oneself and training to master the art of drinking substantial amounts of alcohol without food (potato famine does that to one). People who attempt to become professionals overnight seldom survive more than a few St. Patrick days or wakes. Note the slow and deliberate pace of the Irish in mastering drinking a pint (and subsequent pints) as a competitive sport. True professionals.

I could site many other examples but you get my drift. No two people drink or tolerate alcohol alike. So folks, don’t try this at home without supervision. Call a buddy and drink responsibly. OK, keep the laughter down./s

PS. Reminds me of an Aggie Lu au - a six pack and a potato (optional). Go Texas!

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”

I think it is attributed to Benjamin Franklin.

In any case, I was a teetotaler, but I got over it. I like Sake, and “frozen concoctions” esp. if they have rum and bananas in them. I also drink wine and bit of beer. I wish I liked beer more...

My father used to claim that until you got used to it, Scotch tasted like “water left-over after a fire”.

He got used to it.

Scotch is definitely an acquired taste in my case. I don’t drink it much anymore but I learned to like it back in my college days. As one gets older ones limits and tastes change.

My dad, bless his heart, drank and tried to discourage me from drinking. As a result, I have always treated alcohol with respect and never abused it (well maybe once or twice). Maybe because my grandfather died an alcoholic at an early age.

“for problem drinkers, articles like this are just what they’re looking for to rationalize their continued abuse of alcohol, rather than seek help. (”Hey!....it’s good for me!”)”

Yeah! Cuz without this article, or similar articles, those alcoholics would never find justification to keep drinking!

Oh, they'd keep drinking all right. All I'm saying is this gives them one more excuse.

I sleep just as poorly with 5 drinks in me as with none; needless to say, I’m having a few drinks tonight.

I take advil for my arthritis but I don’t take it unless I’m dying. I’m so afraid I’ll mess up my liver.

I’m not aware that is a problem with Advil.

Ah, yes. Bring up the Temperance lobby. So does Diageo, the largest maker of alcohol in the world.

No one wants to outlaw alcohol today, as prohibition does not work, but many do want people — especially young people — to know exactly what they’re risking when they choose to drink.

Knowing the risks, and having watched loved ones lose their lives to alcohol, I still choose to drink now and then. But not much and not often.
