Richard Kiel, the 7-foot-2 actor who played Jaws, the James Bond villain with the teeth of steel, died Wednesday. He was 74. Kiel broke his leg last week and died in St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., according to several media reports.

Those late seventies/early eighties James Bond movies like Moonraker and A View to a Kill are, to this day, my favorites. I know many, if not most, Bond fans consider the movies during that period the worst of the series when it degenerated into the campy and absurd. But I still prefer them to the much more “serious” modern Bond movies...

my favorites too! actually, Roger Moore is my favorite Bond... i know--not a popular pick...

I happened to be on the same flight with him form Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 1985. When we deboarded in Las Vegas some girls asked him if they could have their picture taken with him. He said yes and he asked me if I would take the pictures. After I took the pictures he thanked me profusely and told me how kind I was. He was the nicest man I ever met. I did not know what his religion was at that time, but his behavior was Christlike.

“Kiel broke his leg last week and died in St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno”

A blood clot formed from a break can turn loose and be fatal.

If the Bond movies were true to the Ian Fleming novels, there wouldn’t have even been a Jaws character. Nor did the novels have a “Q” character supplying Bond with all those gadgets.

The only thing the James Bond movies and books had in common were some of the character’s names- the novels were different from the movies in every way.

James Bond has basically become a superhero comic book character in order to keep folks interested.

True but some of us enjoy The Lone Ranger and Superman.

Entertaining escapism.

Graphic scenes which seem to be a staple of the Craig Bond movies are not enjoyed in this home.

With respect, m'FRiend, "Q" (whose name was given as Major Boothroyd, and whose official position at Universal Export was "Armourer") appeared in at least 2 of the original Fleming novels. Perhaps most memorably, when "M" forced Bond to get rid of his Beretta .25 in favour of the Walther PPK in "Doctor No", it was "Q" who, when asked his view of the .25, replied, "Ladies' gun, sir.", which irritated Bond considerably.

The "Q" of the novels was not the gadgeteer portrayed by Desmond Llewelyn, as you so accurately note.

Only 2 (or 2 1/2, if you count Doctor No, which was reasonably faithful to the novel) of the films were pretty scrupulous regarding their respective novels: "From Russia With Love" and "Goldfinger". The film "Thunderball" began the great diversion from the novels, and by the time of the atrocious "You Only Live Twice", said diversion was complete.

Sure, except James Bond was supposed to be a human spy- not Superman.

The James Bond franchise has devolved into fantasy.

Call me old fashioned, but I still like movies with a plot, acting, and some believability.

I stand corrected- it’s been a long time since I read those (I’m currently reading THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN.)

However, Q played a minor role in the novels and any gadgets Bond used were minimal (and crude by today’s standards.)

James Bond was supposed to be a human spy- not Superman.

OK...Let Bond die. End the franchise. I would be cool with that.

In the meantime...

The Lone Ranger was not immortal.

Seriously I hear ya. It’s understandable to want a movie series to follow the books. No problem with that.

Bond doesn’t have to die, and I realize that the movies must deviate a little from the books- that’s understandable since the USSR is no more and the novel James Bond is from the 50s and 60s eras- but James Bond went from spy thriller to superhero fantasy.

It’s the same with the Bourne novels- they have nothing in common with the movies.

Oh the Bourne movies. Can’t get into them probably because of the herky jerky video style that is SO popular.
