A group of Mosul residents have formed a special militia group to fight Islamic State (IS) militants in an effort to free the city from the extremist group.
IS opponents have united and formed a council to liberate Mosul, said a spokesman of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) branch in Mosul.
On Monday, opponents of ISIS formed a union called the Mosul Liberation Council, said Saied Mamuzini, KDP spokesman.
Mamuzini also stated that the group is working together to attack IS bases in Mosul and the surrounding areas.
Sources have said that since the formation of the council, IS have abandoned some quarters as they have been attacked, suffering heavy losses.
At times, opposition have risen in the center in Mosul, and there is evidence of internal conflict among Islamic State fighters, stated Mamuzini.
Mamuzini explained that the groups participating in the council are Shabab Mosul, Saraya Mosul, Sawarl Mosul, Mosuls Free Officers and others.
Since early June, Mosul has been under the control IS insurgents and most of the citys residents has fled in to Kurdistan region.
