My gosh, why not let the children play all day and give them a nice cushy job when they hit 17, with the job being a nice cushy job. Maybe they could be paid to be cushy at home ...oh wait, we do it’s called welfare.

So you are comparing homework to working at your job?Perhaps after putting in an 8 hour day at your job you should then spend another 8 hours at your workplace for free?Thats what homework does.Students spend 8 hours in a classroom and then are expected to spend 4-8 hours on homework?Insane.

I agree with this!

I’ve seen years of homework being sent home so the parents have to teach (for up to 3 hours a night after working all day) what the teachers can’t or don’t because they are too busy dealing with class discipline - thanks to liberal principals who allow the inmates to rule the asylum

or trying to survive by being buddies with their students

then when the “homework” goes back to school it is graded by the kid who sits next to yours

rarely in my careers did I ever bring home 3 hours of work a night. Git it done in the workplace/school

“The real reason to do this so that parents do not see the curriculum”

Could be. I wouldn’t doubt it. The whole point of public
school is to train kids to show up on time, do meaningless
tasks without question and think the way they want them to
think in preparation for the job market. Making good little
workers to be used to create wealth for the state chosen
elite. The ones who cant cut it in the private sector go
to the public sector, that would be the unemployable typical
government worker. Nothing is taught in public school about
entrepreneurship or self employment.

I still have nightmares about 4th grade long division homework. And back then if you misbehaved in class teacher made you copy a full page in the dictionary and turn it in to her. My parents got me the big fine print Merriam Websters version. I copied a few pages until I got it.

“The real reason to do this so that parents do not see the curriculum”

You NAILED it. As it is, I never cared what the curriculum was because I knew it sucked. Math would NEVER be learned using what our public (and sadly, most private) schools now use, and reading is simply taught too late (they don’t actually teach reading until 3rd or 4th grade now...before that it’s their little Sight Word game that is totally useless, or worse). Not to mention that what little they do teach is now targeted to girls and minorities, rather than all kids.

So, as parents, you either take their education into your own hands, or watch them flail away. I chose the first option.

That has been my experience; my children have a lot of homework, including items not taught in class (the parents are supposed to teach them if the computer can’t).

Many of their teachers are young & ignorant, talking about kids’ music to play “pal” instead of teach. I am not surprised that so many of them molest children; they are incapable of adult relationships.

One other comment:

Not being assigned homework is a BLESSING if parents can figure that out, for that frees up time for the kids to be TAUGHT PROPERLY. One of the biggest problems that I had in after-schooling my kids was that they would get busy-work from school too. So often I just did their busy-work and had them copy it, and then we got back to do REAL MATH at 4+ grade levels ahead of where the school was.

While I do not think that homework should be banned I am for some method to the madness. My freshman has over 2-3 hours a night, every night. That is just BS. Oh and this is a private school.

I have a granddaughter who just started high school. I was amazed at the amount of homework she had in elementary and junior high. Hours and hours of it. It really was ridiculous. I don’t remember having over and hr of homework. It was every night but still wasn’t a lot.

The story I got was that the kids won’t do it anyway so what’s the point of assigning them homework. They are too busy with sports and other activities to waste time on homework. Besides they wouldn’t be able to text and surf the web till midnight if they had to do homework.

Now they do it during class time. That way the teacher only has to prepare for 20-30 minutes of actual teaching then the kiddies work on their homework the remaining 15-20 minutes. Disgusting, and the country is paying for it in dumbed down kids that don’t have any drive to accomplish more than just what it takes to get by.

Homework taught me to be responsible and get things done on time.

The metro school district in which my wife teaches elementary school mandates that all students be given three additional chances to complete missing homework before a student may be given a zero for a missing homework assignment. The teacher must make contact with the parent(s) or guardian(s) about the missing assignment each time. The teacher must consult with the principal before actually giving the zero.

Scouts' oath.
