Revealed: How much more Whole Foods is REALLY costing you
UK Daily Mail ^ | Septeber 24, 2014 | Ashley Collman

It's no secret that Whole Foods isn't the most cost-friendly of grocery stores, but a new survey shows just how much more customers pay at the natural food retailer compared to other regional supermarkets. New York investment firm Wolfe Research recently did a study, comparing baskets of groceries at the upscale organic market to other stores across the nation and confirmed that tags at Whole Foods are through the roof. In one instance, Wolfe totaled 60-72 items at Whole Foods and then compared them to prices for the same exact products at Houston's HEB, a Mariano's grocery store in Chicago, and a Wegmans market in Washington, DC.

Couldn’t care less.
Food, firearms musical instruments, not going to buy anything less than the best, damn the cost.

I think the point of the article was that they were buying the exact same organic products at each store. I’m still not surprised. I shop at Whole Foods because they carry products the other stores don’t. My local store has a huge selection of cheeses and huge variety of mushrooms, for example. However you’ve got to be extremely careful to avoid all kinds of things that can be had elsewhere for much less money.

Organic and gluten free foods are huge money makers for grocery stores as customers will pay any price for these items without complaint. The rest of us count our nickles on every food purchase, but the natural food fanatic will gladly shell out $5 for a gallon of “organic” milk, $4 for a dozen “organic eggs” or $3 for organic mac & cheese in a recycled cardboard box.

When it’s so easy to grow your own veggies, why do people go to Whole Foods or any other store? And think of all the chemicals and pesticides in that food at Whole Foods. It’s no wonder we have high cancer rates in this country.

I don;t begrudge anyone making money off selling snake oil to a bunch of stupid yuppee wannabes who fancy themselves as commies of some sort. God has a sense of humor!

The Whole Foods 365 brand of milk that does not have the hormones and junk in it is at least $1.50 to $2.00 less than the organic brand at a regular grocery store.

The “gluten free” craze may be the most annoying. Fruit is now advertised as “gluten free”. The vast majority of people that avoid gluten, don’t even know what it is. Most Americans are foolish sheep.

The Omega-3 bottle that I buy at Whole Foods is $3.00 less than at a regular grocery store.

I’ve seen “recycled” toilet paper in stores with an environmentally-friendly green label. It’s a dingy brown color lest you thought they might have used any dyes to make the paper look white. I’ll bet it’s a big seller at Whole Foods where envirodupes go to shop. No thanks. Plain white affordable rolls qoek just fine for me - at least until the enviros mandate wiping our butts with palm leaves or mandating bidets.

BTW, I see folks leave HEB with cloth grocery bags with the Whole Foods logo on them to con their neighbors into thinking they are trendy envirodupes when they are unloading their hybrids.

Another Austin-based company ripping off Texans is nothing new. You should see what passes for newspapers in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Now that’s really fraud.

We need professional journalists to tell us Whole Foods is the most expensive place you can shop?

My Whole Foods sells mostly “conventional” fruits and vegetables - i.e, non-organic. And almost no local produce. Yes, you can get 100 different mushrooms and hot peppers but how about an organic broccoli crown? Or local corn in summer?

Also, the baked goods are not great - although they’re much better in Manhattan given the great bakeries they buy from.

The prices in the wine section are outrageous!

So true. If you made up a word, and started advertising food free of it people would buy it.

Anyone who’s stepped through their doors knows it’s more expensive. 10 and 15 years ago, I ventured in 3 3 times for 3 specific items I had exhausted all other avenues to find. Haven’t been back since, though I will admit to driving by slowly to shake my head at the skinny sickly looking crowd who do shop there.

HEB is usually cheaper than Walmart for their canned goods. Walmart reduces their soon to expire meats whereas HEB doesn’t order enough meat to service their customers so never has to reduce their prices. They will have one or two beef roasts so you have to grab when it’s there. I’ve literally done a meet the meat dude in the back for a sneaked package of frozen fish and it caused an uproar at the cash register. HEB is beginning to not stock their lower priced brands and is on the fast track to becoming a more high dollar store and now feature delis and bakeries and such in their larger city stores. Sadly, in many small towns here, HEB it the only game in town where incomes are low so they are ignoring their customer base. Our store has poor management so entire sections can be totally empty. Two days ago, the entire dairy section was empty. Bread is usually half bare so you have to choose another brand and it’s been frozen. If they have canned peas (which I haven’t found in forever) then you better stock up because it’ll be months before you find them again. I seriously thought they’d quit making 20 Mule Team Borax 20 years ago until I saw it in the city last week so bought a box. I can’t remember why I needed it. It isn’t unusual for a customer to ask if you really need two whatevers and can they have one. I’m at the tipping point of taking my business 30 miles away to Walmart especially if HEB keeps adding more Whataburger items that no one buys. Really? They can stock high priced Whataburger frozen fries and mustard but can’t keep milk stocked? These days, grocery trips are third world shopping adventures.

Best thing is to avoid Austin, Dallas and Houston like the plague. When we secede those lib bastions should be shipped off to CA.

Can’t argue that one with you, firearms and musical instruments are worth the cost if the craftsmanship is in them. Hubby played a big KORG key board and a Peavy guitar. I carry a Taurus Ultra Lite 38 revolver, as I can clean it and it’s butt fits my small hands.

We have a choice Navy Commissary or Kroger’s both cost about the same. Commissary has a 5% restock fee. They do take coupons. Base fuel station is always 3-4 cents higher than off base.

Kroger’s has TN’s full sales tax, but lots of sales, coupons, gas points. And run a free Friday product most Fridays. Plus they will at certain times of the year do a 4 times the gas points on gift cards. Using their Little Clinic is gas points, as is prescription. Take the survey and another 55 pts. We have not paid full price for gas in a year. Usually a $1 off up to 35 gals. Hubby fills my car with a the lawnmower gas can, then takes his car and can and fills up. Nice to get gas for $2.19 his last fill of 22 gals. If he had to fill today it would be $2.01 with the $1 off per gal.

I call that maximizing.

Whole Foods is the only place within driving distance from my house that sells really stinky cheese. Sometimes I can find there a piece of Limburger that is absolutely rancid - smells like a dirty jock strap.

Man, it's good on black pumpernickel toast with chopped onions.

My girlfriend refuses to kiss me after, though. Something to keep in mind.
