Radio in VA reports Gillespie about to throw in towel (unconfirmed)

Radio reporting Gillespie going to throw in towel. Do we know which precinct in Fairfax turned in the final votes that put Warner over the top? Seems pretty suspicious, when Gillespie was ahead right up to that point, then Fairfax turns in just enough for a Warner "win".

I’m not a libertarian, but those people who vote libertarian are saying, “we don’t like the R or the D”. So it’s jumping to conclusions to think that any of those voters would vote for the R or the D, especially in great enough numbers to make a difference for either candidate.

It is definitely true that Libertarians play the spoiler role in some districts/states handing victories to Democrats that Republicans would have otherwise had. However, in Virginia I don't think that dynamic is true. From everything I've heard and witnessed, Libertarian voters here draw as much or more from Democrats as they do Republicans - infact many simply wouldn't have voted for either of the two major parties. They chose to flush their votes down the crapper by voting 3rd party, but I don't think it hurt either Cuccinelli or Gillespie.

Relative to the rest of the state, Virginia Beach hasn't changed much at all politically since the 1970s. It routinely votes 1% to 5% more Republican than the state as a whole and still does.

Fairfax, on the other hand, actually voted even more Republican than the rest of the state (in presidential elections) up through 2000, then went hard left.

In state-level elections Fairfax, unlike Va. Beach, has been dead red (Commie red) for a long time and is getting worse lately.

That is pretty typical of Fairfax County. They always hold their results until all the others are in. Being a Dem. stronghold of Govt. employees, I am not surprised by the results. Gillespie should be proud that he did as well as he did. I would have liked to see more of those Redskin Ads., but that is Monday morning Quarterbacking. Never expected him to win, but he should be proud he did that well.

Yup, Fairfax is overwhelming blue now. It is like Virginia's version of Chicago in Illinois. One thing people need to understand is that holding vote counts back is not "cheating" exactly. It isn't generally manufactured votes, it's just urban areas that report slower. If it looks like the Dems might lose, they will make an extra effort to count every ballot that might otherwise not be added into the total till some days later (absentee, provisional, etc) which also slows things down.

Next time, all precincts should wait for Fairfax to report first. Same with Cook county in IL

Actually, it should be required that no one reports until all report. Period. No exceptions. And if that means a wait, then so be it.

1. All report they are ready to count. 2. All count at same time with zero communication devices in the counting room. 3. All report at same time.

Thanks, losertarians and “mavericks,” for casting 53,300 for the weasely little POS Sarvis. You did your part in putting Warner over the top.

F*** you very much.

"Just imagine if the GOP would actually get behind it’s Virginia candidates and invest some money in defeating Democrat opponents. First, Ken Cuccinelli had a late surge and narrowly missed a major last minute upset over Terry “The Punk” McAuliffe in the Virginia’s governor’s race earlier this year. And now, Ed Gillespie falls just shy of knocking off the Democrat incumbent’s senate seat."

Well said; it is like the GOPe is engaged in preemptive defeat or is so blind they cannot forecast beyond the next day.

This isn’t Fairfax County that is the problem, it is Virginia Beach. We used to win it by 20 points, which offset Fairyfax. McCain lost Virginia Beach, Romney won it by less than 3%, Gillespie won it by 7%. It seems to be swinging back in the right direction, but we have to run up bigger margins here (add Chesapeake and Chesterfield to the list) to win the state.

Interesting point and I know you are very familiar with VA politics from previous posts.

Still, Fairfax is a disaster now. Take it from someone who lives here. Even otherwise conservative people up here vote for the party of government because their careers and livelihoods depend on it. The people up here oppose any kinds of shutdowns or cuts of any kind, especially things like the sequestration defense cuts. Almost every job, in one way or the other, is connected to government. Even if a company is not a prime or sub government contracter, so many of the supporting companies make their money from providing services to them.

This is another case of “LANDSLIDE” LYNDON effect. For all you history “BUFFS”, this was how LBJ got elected the first time he ran as a Texas senator. Yep, he won by 23 votes, all stolen, of course. Lyndon can thank the “DUKE” of Duval county for that.

We need to dig up the fraud, even if it doesn’t give us enough votes. If fraud is not stopped. We might as well give up the country.

You got it. Voter fraud has become a fine art among the Dems.

I’m very concerned Gillespie was cheated by crooked ballot machines, but this Fairfax thing is NOT indicative of fraud. The precincts in Fairfax have very high populations (and probably very stupid election workers), so they take longer to count. The most difficult to count districts are also the ones that are the most firmly entrenchedly liberal.

What is so screwed up about this, is that he a a member of the GOPe and yet they did nothing to help him. Didn’t John Warner come out in support of Mark Warner? Did the GOP throw any money in this race for Ed?

Obenshain was a senior adviser to the Gillespie campaign; he and Ed will decide privately who will run in 2017. The competition will come from former Lt Gov Bill Bolling, a card-carryiing member of the GOP-e who bailed when he didn’t get the Republican nomination for governor in 2013.

The real scandal in Virginia politics is perpetual candidate Robert Sarvis; always enters the most important race, has just enough money to siphon off the votes needed to deny the GOP a victory. How does Sarvis support himself as a professional candidate? Can’t prove it, but there has to be money flowing to him from the Dims. In 2013, some of his biggest donors were Democrats, and I think the effort is clearly organized and systemic.

The solution is easy: the GOP needs to find their own “Sarvis,” and give him or her the resources to win. Then, with Sarvis out of the way, the GOP libertarian can withdraw from the race and throw his support to the Republican candidate. Another option is to quietly field a Green Party candidate who can run to the left of the Dims and siphon off votes from that end of the political spectrum.

Beat the Dims at their own game.

The reason VA took back part of the district of Columbia was that the folks in Alexandria wanted the slave trade. I think as part of reparations, it is only fair that we give that part of Virginia back to the federal government.

It is screwed up because old farts like John Warner and Chichester came out for Mark Warner. Here you have a GOPe candidate in Gillespie, and those guys can’t even support him.

the Virgina democrat machine exists to get out the vote in three localities, Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria. Just like in Maryland it’s Montgomery, Prince George’s and Baltimore counties.
The remainder of both states is demonstrably more conservative than those few areas.

Simply, there are TWO GOPs in Virginia. One is the RNC-connected GOPe, and is somewhat left of center.

And then there are the activists. Who trend Tea Party and much harder right.

Hell, last year, when Terry McAwful had smooth sailing to the ‘Rat nomination, there was a knock-down drag-out between the GOPe wing, led by Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, and the Tea Party Wing, led by Ken Cuccinelli.

The GOPe sat on their hands AND their wallets, AND Bolling even helped McAwful’s campaign . . .

That’s exactly why Fairfax county needs to be ceded back to the federal government. It is not right that these folks who suck on the government teat get to decide representation for all the rest of the Commonwealth.
