“Fleeted up”.... Cripes
Totally agree...especially the line....”think of how they’d show it on CNN...”
ROE at it’s finest...
Exactly! That whole conversation just burned me!
OK, I’m going to chime in from outer space here:
Independence Day: Marine fighter pilots and volunteer Veterans in FA-18’s vs. Aliens
Aliens: Colonial Marines vs. Aliens
Battle Los Angeles: 2/5 Marines from Camp Pendleton vs. Aliens. Some of the most heartfelt patriotic footage of the USMC I’ve ever seen. I LOVE this movie.
Hmm, there seems to be a common trait here. HAPPY BIRTHDAY USMC!
Happy Veterans to all our fine and deserving heroes. God Bless you and your families. Thank-you for your service.
Okay, at the point where most of the PT guys and Sandy are left on Bataan...
And we know how THAT turns out....
Gut wrenching....
Without question, the Spielberg produced follow on to Band of Brothers..... An incredibly well produced and written-
“The Pacific” . A true story of WWII in the Pacific theater against the Japanese Empire, and is instructional in how to fight a fanatic suicidal enemy (like islamofascism).
It follows three Marines: Eugene Sledge, John Basilone and Robert Leckie. It is based on memoirs With the Old Breed, Helmet for My Pillow and Red blood, Black sand, as well as interviews with many veterans of the war. It aired on March 14, 2010.
Description on wikipedia by episodes. This was HBO miniseries:

“Destination Tokyo” right now, soon to be followed by “Objective Burma.”
xlnt
“Heartbreak Ridge” with Mr. Eastwood.
It was great. Beirut didn’t even merit a mention.
No SEAL has ever been captured alive. That’s a pretty cool fact that SEALs probably don’t want to jinx by putting into a TV show. But it’s true.
No mention of the two biggest losses of SEALs, both on helos: Redwing and Extortion in Afghanistan.
The trailer for “Unbroken” is pretty awesome. War in the Pacific, Jap POW camps, etc.

Movie Plot:
Unbroken centers on Louis Zamperini, a former Olympian whose plane crashed at sea during World War II. Zamperini and two crewmates floated adrift for 47 days and 2000 miles, he was caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a POW camp where he was specifically targeted by a sadistic overseer.
I thought the pre-history of the UDT/SEALs was excellent. The modern history was a bit dry and skipped a few important events, but overall it seemed to be a respectful view of the teams and their types of accomplishments. I am happy the program didn’t try to over glorify the history of the teams, but, instead, it tried to show that the teams have been needed and played important roles throughout their history.
Pure quality, probably my favorite movie. A timeless story, just as relevant today as it was in 1946.
The big takeaway for me was a confirmation of what I’ve been feeling for years, that the SEALs have “mission-crept” into becoming what I call “sea rangers.” I’m glad we have enough that we could, for example, take down those two giant Iraqi oil terminals, but what those guys do today has almost nothing to do with what we did through the 1980s, when out of a 16 man platoon, a 4 man mission was typical, 8 uncommon but sometimes. 16 on a mission, never.
Now, entire SEAL Teams deploy forward, and there are SEAL admirals and captains all over the place micro-managing everything, and scaling missions up and up. Sea rangers.
Totally agree...we have it in our DVD collection also...another one I can’t get through without blubbing...am a big Teresa Wright fan.
Having high ranking members adds clout but it also makes for larger mission profiles. I had the same experience. Nine on a team suddenly became 26 once higher ranks became involved. I wouldn’t want to be a Sea Ranger, that profile would change too many important elements of being a SEAL.
I agree 100%. I liked it better when as an O-3, I was the senior frog from Beirut to Virginia, (not counting a few in Italy and Spain who were not in my chain of command).
Back when you could pretend the radio was not working, and ignore higher for a few hours or more.
