GOP-Controlled House Kicks Off New Session by Reading Constitution Aloud

Republicans in the House came to power vowing to govern by the book -- or in the case of the Constitution, by the parchment.

And partly as a nod to Republican representatives elected as part of the conservative Tea Party movement, one of the first acts of the newly GOP-controlled House will be to read that founding document aloud on Thursday.

Boehner will begin Thursday by reading the Constitution's preamble: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Though it has been inserted as text into the Congressional Record before, the supreme law of the land has never been read aloud before in the body known as "the People's House."

The man responsible for the exercise, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., says it's more than just a simple civics lesson.

"This is a very symbolic showing to the American people," said Goodlatte, "and it's a powerful message to members of Congress. We are a nation of laws, not of men."

What a joke. Start by reading the constitution, then sit on their hands while Obama shreds it. Well maybe not totally, they will attack their base for expecting a response.

The Constitution is part of the Organic law of the United States of America.

It was recognized as such by it’s inclusion in Statutes at Large #1.

It has been recently re-recognized, I think in 2004 or so.

Yo, Mr. Goodlatte -- we're so far past "symbolic showings" that your little reading is LESS than a JOKE. As is your pathetic idea of a "powerful message."

We ARE NOT, and HAVE NOT, been a nation of laws for the past 6 effin' years, Sir!!!! So either LEAD us, or get outta the way!

How about the Declaration if Independence too, esp paragraph 2;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. These words and the words that follow, were not written only for the Yangs, but for the Kohms as well! They must apply to everyone, or they mean nothing!

I am afraid it is going to be longer than two years. At this point I don’t think this will correct without shooting. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think civil war is on the horizon, but tyranny always fails in spectacular fashion, and our kids, or grand kids will have to live through it. I just hope they still have enough American spirit in them they don’t wander around lost without an oppressing government to lead them.

Absolutely.

Someone needs to introduce a resolution posting in big bold letters on the wall the enumerated powers. Any bill passing through that house shall conform. Anything outside of those powers is unconstitutional and void.
