I thought “Elysium” was all right, but I was desperate the day I watched it, so my judgment may have been clouded.

Its an SFX movie at it’s core. American take on Japan’s giant robot anime. Where it crushes Avatar is that it lacks the heavy handed ‘man is a cancer’ message. Which to me is what killed Avatar.

I’d probably say, though it’s wholly different, it’s about the best Sci-Fi since the original Matrix. Blade Runner it ain’t. But for what it is, it does it well.

Saint Vincent is very good, a kind-hearted comedy about a bitter old guy, nicely played by Bill Murray. I thought Interstellar had some interesting science fiction aspects. The Theory of Everything is a nice "love conquers all" biography of Stephen Hocking.

There are almost always a few good movies. You have to wade through the muck and avoid the over the top Hollywood secnsationalism to find them.

The message in Avatar was overpowering and insulting.

I actually thought The Matrix was deathly boring. Though I’m sure it was a technological breakthrough. Truly wretched acting and dialogue though...and chop socky stuff ripped off from various Asian sources.

I liked it alright enough, mainly because Neil Bouwkamp is really good at creating believable sci-fi worlds, and the mercenary Kruger villain was awesome.

The rest of the obvious PC preaching plot could not have been more obvious though.

I new what it was going in (watched it a couple years after release), so when I did, I tried doing it from the mindset of (imagine this rewritten”. IMO, if you rewrote it to simply remove that one plot point...change it to ‘we must come here to survive’ instead of “we come here to rape you like indians”, the whole movie works fine.

But the agenda was their intent and damn the torpedoes. Cameron wanted to expunge his white guilt.

Oh the acting sucked for sure. What made it for me was thinking about the cerebral ‘what if’ aspects and how it was dealt with. On the surface for sure it was a popcorn movie. And yea, the Hong Kong wirework definitely didn’t help.
