but what if you already know you don’t belong there and had no choice i the matter? What is gained by abusing a human being like that... for the mere sake of abusing them? There is nothing glorious or attractive about it to me. .... Where DON’t you belong? There was no abuse, but, there was rising to what you can do and seeing you could do more. What is attractive to you may be what is attractive to all pansies?

Same thing is true with the Black Hats at Fort Benning. They had great fun dropping young officers like myself for push-ups. I must have lowered the elevation of Ft Benning by a foot.

38 years later, I still remember most of the commands to prepare for a jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

My BT was in Fort Dix NJ back in May of 1971. Every DI I had was an Airborne Ranger. BT was not easy for some but I took it in stride. Being raised on a farm, I already knew what hard work was about. Many of the draftees never had a callous on their hands, the lateral bars was terrible for them. MY DI’s were just as forceful and loud as those marines depicted in this video.

There is nothing glorious or attractive on the battlefield or combat. These guys are not being trained to be Susie homemaker. They are being trained to be killers in combat and to make it back home. Remember that!

Something lost over the generations was the intent of the harassment package.

When the US went into total warfare, as in WWI and WWII, every able bodied man wore a uniform.

Not every able bodied man, though, had the faculties to perform in combat as infantry.

There does exist a percentage of the population, when faced with adversity, tends to physically freeze up, dwelling instead by spiritual devotion. This particular trait isn’t volitional, other than remaining in fellowship with God, but it is associated with particular spiritual gifts not given to all men.

Boot camp was the initial screening mechanism to better identify these traits, amongst those who sincerely sought combat roles. The introduction to adversity and stress inducing environments helped identify those who tended to freeze up under combat environments, so they wouldn’t be improperly assigned to direct action line units.

The harassment packages were also used to further condition all personnel to a common training experience, forming an espirit de corps and camaraderie amongst enlistees. It also helped assess proclivities of the individual with the needs of the Corps.

I was simply pointing out that your statement was based on complete ignorance of the situation, and therefore not really worth the effort that you put into typing it. The drill instructors were training the recruits, and doing an excellent job.

For one thing, I am hardly “ignorant”... if anything, it is you that has no clue about the richness and range of my personal experiences. That being said, it’s laughable to consider that you think it’s your ultimate call on what is and is not worth me communicating.

You are “ignorant” of how Marine Corps boot camp recruits are trained, and yet you chose to castigate Marine DI’s for doing their job - which they happened to be performing in a typical excellent Marine Corps fashion.
