Imagine the Earth Entering an Ice Age
wattsupwiththat.com ^ | December 7, 2014 | Guest Post by Bob Tisdale

The Earth is presently in an interglacial period—a period between ice ages. Since the end of the last ice age, Earth’s surface temperatures have been above the temperature needed to maintain ice sheets and glaciers, which covered much of the land masses at mid-to-high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. As a result, those ice sheets and glaciers have been melting for tens of thousands of years and sea levels have risen…and will continue to rise until the start of the next ice age.

Many of us are old enough to remember the scare stories from the 1970s, a time when climate scientists were warning that Earth was returning to an ice age.

For fun, imagine the multidecadal uptick in global surface temperatures didn’t happen from the 1970s to present—that global surfaces actually cooled a comparable amount, that sea levels were dropping, that glaciers and ice sheets were gaining mass.

Would mankind still be blamed? What would be different?

Ice ages are far more destructive as the total amount of active biomass on earth drops sharply.

Give me warming any day.

Love Anthony’s site. I hate the cold and never have understood the fear of a couple degree warmer temperature. A better focus of effort might be to reduce the percentage of black roofs in cities, to reflect heat and cool urban heat zones. But otherwise, I am sure Canada, the northern US, and Siberia won’t mind a bit longer growing season.

You better believe it. I was a kid in the 1970s and I remember the stories, propaganda and even cartoons pointing out that mankind was polluting the air and that was blocking the sun cooling the earth. I think temperatures were level for a week in 1979 when climate wasn't our fault.

***Many of us are old enough to remember the scare stories from the 1970s,***

I remember those days! We were going into an ice age and had better get ready for it! Even our farm magazines warned us that we had better get ready to grow crops in Alabama that would have been grown in Illinois due to the coming ice age! I even moved from my beloved New Mexico to Arkansas because I could get two crops in for survival! Then I found BUGs! Moths, chiggers, ticks! Forget two crops!

We were fed a bill of goods back in the 1970s! Anyone who doubts it should read the MOTHER EARTH NEWS at that time or THE WHOLE EARTH CATALOG from those years.
Now I am still stuck in Arkansas. One thing I did learn, In 1956, The first cold weather and snow came within one week before or after Thanksgiving! 1976 was an especially bad year! Extreme cold on Thanksgiving day!

Every year has proven this correct. This year it came within a week of Thanksgiving. No change from 1956. So much for GLO-BULL WARMING!

Around 1997 I noticed the jonquils coming up on Jan 5! Earliest ever! About the time the glo-ull warmingists were proclaming gloom and doom!

They have never come up that early since.

There have been four major glacial periods in the last half million years.

Yeah, the Climate Liars would blame it on human activity.

There is a Paul Newman movie called “quintet” that depicts a frozen new york city. i think people play some killing game based on the number 5 hence the name of the movie. You will never see this movie as i think he funded it and buried it.

Reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions and smoke suppression are the most likely man made causes of global warming. Therefore those responsible for enacting the Clean Air Act and similar legislation are to blame for any global warming.

It doesn’t take much of a scientist to see the cycle in post 7. And our current warm period is getting close to the longest on record. I’m not saying I’ll see one-mile thick ice over Chicago again in my lifetime, but I WOULD wager that is the next big climate change coming.

Although perhaps God will extend our current warm period until His time to destroy the earth comes. Or, perhaps another ice period WOULD set up the huge battle between nations in some warm place where you could still grow crops - like the valley of Armageddon.

I downloaded that movie about 6 months ago. It's easy enough to see if you'd look for it.

Thank you! I’m one of those people! Can someone please tell me Al Gore’s credentials on that one? Thanks for the post!

A rapid cooling cycle could have short term mitigation fairly easily. There are places under the sea where there are enormous amounts of methane ice.

http://i.imgur.com/yZ44Az8.jpg

They exist only because of great cold, great pressure, and a rock layer protecting it from the water. However, carefully placed explosive charges could likely erupt most of a field of this ice at once. This would mean a vast amount of methane spewed into the atmosphere.

Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, trapping 29 times more heat than the same amount of CO2.

But atmospheric methane doesn’t last. Uncontrolled build-up of methane in Earth’s atmosphere is naturally checked—by methane’s reaction with hydroxyl radicals formed from singlet oxygen atoms and with water vapor.

The end result would be a short term increase in atmospheric temperature, that would somewhat mitigate the cooling. That is, inhibit its momentum.

There’s an interesting line in the book “Lucifer’s Hammer”. The astronauts are circling the earth, discussing how we’re probably entering a new ice age versus global warming.
One astronaut says the pollution and heat pollution are probably the only reason we aren’t in an ice age then, when the other says “But we’re running out of oil!”
