It was the sword of choice for the discerning Viking - superstrong, and almost unbeatable in battle. Yet mystery surrounds a small number of Viking swords researchers have uncovered. They are all inscribed with a single word - 'Ulfberht', which experts believe may reveal their maker.

Noted in the article one found mining gravel in a river bed. I’ve read previously that most swords of antiquity that are found are found in river beds, being lost during fordings. Few are actually found on battle sites because the fields are picked over by the victorious and scavengers immediately afterwards.

Yes, except that the Viking “alf”, often translated as “elf”, was a creature more akin to what we think of as dwarves. To extrapolate then, these would not be the workers of arcanely manipulated mithril but rather the divinely guided forgemasters of adamantine.
