A zealot, a rebel, but no miracle-worker: film studios plot a secular take on life of Jesus

Leading film-makers are courting controversy with plans for adaptations of provocative books about Jesus Christ that are likely to generate a backlash from traditional Christians.

British producer David Heyman is developing a film based on Reza Aslan’s bestselling book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, while Paul Verhoeven, the Dutch director, has been working on an adaptation of his own book, Jesus of Nazareth, for five years.

Aslan, a member of the American Academy of Religion, made headlines last year when a Fox News interviewer challenged his credentials, as a Muslim, to write an account of Jesus’s life which portrayed him as one of a group of prominent Jewish rebels against the Roman Empire. Aslan’s book was condemned by an evangelical American author and pastor, John S Dickerson, as “a fast-paced demolition of the core beliefs that Christianity has taught about Jesus for 2,000 years”.

And if someone plans to blow up their studios, will they halt the film?

All you have to do is threaten violence and they’ll pull this film.

(Maybe)

The secular left hates Jesus unless they can make a buck off of him.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Mat 5:10-12

The author's a Muslim.

As if Noah and Exodus weren’t epic failures. This will certainly be one more. I’m waiting for all the films on Mohammed.

Non-believers are unconcerned and unaware of the consequences of blasphemy.

Even being non-believers, have they ever considered what might happen if they are wrong?

Although, this is consistent with my observations that the ignorant often have an inexplicable level of confidence and arrogance. God is the judge, but I shudder to think what may be in store for them if they don’t change their ways.

I’ve read Aslan’s book. It’s actually quite good. You do have to check a few things at the door when reading it, but if your faith is strong, it shouldn’t change anything.

It’s actually interesting to read about Jesus the historical figure, outside of the aspect of him being the Son of God. We forget sometimes that Jesus wasn’t spending all of his 33 years performing miracles. I’m sure a good part of that time was spent being human. The picture Aslan’s paints of Jesus being a troublemaker for the Romans is probably spot on. There was a very large zealot movement ongoing during that period as Jews rebelled against Roman rule, which many times was one of brutality.

I found the picture Aslan painted to be enlightening, and it did nothing to shake my faith in God or Jesus.

But nothing has been said that Christians cannot defend themselves against those that revile and persecute them.

It is not expected of innocent Christians to meekly put their heads on the chopping block.

If that were true, Charles Martel and others who fought Islam would be condemned for their actions.

I can already predict the outcome. Jesus will be portrayed by a gay actor. Jesus will be portrayed as a Che Gueverra revolutionary. Jesus will be portrayed as obviously homosexual. Jesus will be portrayed as someone trying to give free health care provided for by the Roman government along with free education. Jesus will be asking the rich to “pay a little more” in taxes. His lines will be very close to an Obama speech with “Yes we can” and “Hope and change” subtly inserted when giving sermons. And, as a last insult to our senses Jesus will have his hands up when the Romans come to get him in a nod to the whole Michael Brown affair. I don’t expect anything less from Hollywood.

Watch “The Bible” mini series. Even if you aren’t a Christian it is very good. Even from a historical and secular perspective it was very well made. Or...Just read the book.
