NJ.com reports that medical students at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are learning about psychiatric disorders through Dr. Anthony Tobia's "Psy-feld" teaching tool.
Tobia diagnoses Jerry Seinfeld's character as obsessive compulsive, George Costanza as being egocentric and Kramer as schizoid. He says Elaine is unable to forge meaningful relationships and Newman was "very sick."

Now it is extremely political.
Psychology used to be a respectable social science. It is no longer intellectually respectable, nor is it a science. Glad I am old and getting ready to retire.

From the Andrea Dora epesisode:
KRAMER: Oh, I’ll take a vet over an M.D. any day. They gotta be able to cure a lizard, a chicken, a pig, a frog.
I think part of the success of the show is that Jerry played the straight man in the first 5 or 6 seasons in the (comedic sense), and if he is or not ocd, his character was a outstanding pivot or medium.
Such a funny show.

It is no longer intellectually respectable, nor is it a science...Lost any pretense of intellectual integrity or apolitical involvement way back in the '80's when the American Psychological Association announced an award to Senator Edward (Chappaquiddick Teddy) Kennedy in recognition of his contribution to the struggle for women's rights and advancement, IMHO.......

Dr. Tobia might want to think hard about why studying real people is much better than playing around with made up characters. My thoughts too - the reason I found the show funny was because they obviously understood the maladies they set for each of the characters - the folks on the show were smarter than those who "study" them.

The point is these Hollywood types in their vain imaginings—fashioning artificial personalities using academic models of human behavior as established by psychiatry, which knows humanity about as well as Don Quixote understands windmills—are less intelligent than bird snot compared to God, who creates reality.

On a schooling level fictional people are better. They’re probably familiar to the students already, you can “bring them in” any time you want, there’s no ethical quandaries around studying people without bothering to try to fix them, and they remain pleasantly static.
