Principal tells kids to bring canned goods to class, throw them at possible gunmen

This school encourages food fights.

An Alabama middle school asked students to bring canned goods to school so they can throw them at potential gunman.

W.F. Burns Middle School in Valley, Ala., said the tactic is part of the ALICE method, which stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate, and teaches students what to do during a shooting.

Principal Priscella Holley sent a note home to parents Friday asking them to send their students back to class with an eight-ounce can of beans, corn, soup or any other food.

Arming kids with cans that can be used as weapons gives them a sense of empowerment, the school said.

Arming kids with cans that can be used as weapons gives them a sense of empowerment, the school said. “We realize at first this may seem odd, however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off-guard,” read a copy of the letter obtained by WHNT. "The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until police arrive. The canned good stun the intruder or even knock him out until police arrive. The canned good item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters the classroom."

If the cans are never used, they will be donated to a local food pantry at the end of the school year, the letter explained.

Grade schools in 30 states and Auburn University use ALICE training, Superintendent of Chambers County Schools Kelli Hodge told WHNT.

“I can honestly say that the major point of the training … is to be able to get kids evacuated and not be sitting ducks hiding under desks,” she told the TV station.

The can-throwing is part of ALICE’s C stage, counter.

An educational video explained that students should fight back by running and throwing things instead of hiding.

“If there’s a gunman in your school, you’re allowed to throw things,” the video explained.

Canned goods aren’t entirely necessary though: staplers, textbooks, binders, lab beakers, shoes, chairs or music stands are all acceptable projectile, according to the video.

ALICE is part of new school safety guidelines ordered by the Department of Education in 2013.

When I read this, I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I showed this to other teachers in the teachers lounge of this rough NYC high school, and they broke into peals of laughter as well. We had just come in from an extended fire drill in the 6 degree wind chill factor weather outside. Why would we have an extended fire drill in such weather? Because some idiot student sprayed the third floor of the building with pepper spray, and we had to evacuate. I had trouble breathing, as I have asthma. Outside, a tiny Indian girl was having such a severe asthma attack that she had to be taken away by ambulance. All so some dumba@@ kid can have 30 seconds of selfish fun.

I could just imagine an intruder coming into a NYC school and having to face down rows of students sending forth a barrage of beans, corn, and tomato sauce. Right?

What is going to keep them from throwing the cans at teacher?

This will work really well until little Johnny hits Tommy with a can of peas.

Utter madness.

Well it is better than hiding under a desk. The chaos of things being thrown would possibly give others time to escape. Like I said, better than hiding under a desk, whimpering.

Actually I think this is excellent. If this had happened at all the other school shootings it would have mattered. Cans of stuff coming at your head spoils the aim, also chairs, books, cans of paint -—anything! Coming at the shooter from behind and before. A barrage of solid objects could swarm the guy. it should have been taught long before.

Everyday it seems that there is a news story that makes me wonder if I missed an earlier news item about a terrible shortage of psychiatric medications sweeping the nation.

Look, it works! How could an AK-47 possibly withstand such an assault? Just like in the movies.

I think it's the result of a surplus, not a shortage.

Wait a minute. If these cans can be used as weapons shouldn’t they be banned under the zero tolerance policy? Little Johnny could be suspended for bringing a can of french cut green beans to school.

You can’t be serious!!!
