Fox Explores ’24’ Without Jack Bauer
Deadline ^ | January 17, 2015 | Nellie Andreeva

Are Jack Bauer or the real-time format at the heart of 24? Fox brass are likely wrestling with that dilemma as they are weighing a possible new limited series installment of the popular franchise.

That’s because the network has been pitched a followup to last summer’s 24: Live Another Day that may or may not feature 24 signature star Kiefer Sutherland. In the the idea, which comes from 24/24: Live Another Day executive producers Howard Gordon, Evan Katz and Manny Coto, “there is a point at which Jack Bauer could come in and fit organically into the story, or they are prepared to do… one installment without him,” Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden said after the Fox executive session today. Imagine TV and Brian Grazer also will be back.

“Potentially, he won’t be in this installment, we’re not sure yet,” Walden said. She stressed that there is no plan to permanently drop Jack Bauer from future seasons of 24. “We’re talking about whether there’s one installment that he’s not in.”

This is similar to what I once posted to the "Black James Bond" thread:

If they want a black super secret agent, then spend the capital to create one, and nurture it over decades and multiple stories until it becomes culturally iconic in its own right.

24 isn't just about the real-time format. It's about the character of the ruthless assassin working for the government to protect the nation at great personal cost. Jack Bauer is a character that was nurtured for over a decade to be an "anti-James Bond" who doesn't get the riches and women as his reward. He instead loses his family, lives underground in squalor, and is an enemy of his nation.

Sure, they could start again with a fresh cast, but they should plan to start the characters from a fresh perspective, and plot an arc that takes the characters in a different direction over many stories.

Maybe take an idealistic soldier who rejects the wanton brutality of Bauer as a first choice, and then learns over time and high cost to the nation the consequences of his inactions.

Then, maybe, bring back Bauer in a few cameo appearances.

They’re thinking of remaking the X-Files again, too. They’re currently trying to get the original cast on board. (Not kidding.)

Kiefer Sutherland is an absolute looney leftist...just like his dad.

I’d love to see another actor re-launch the series...just as a poke to the arrogant leftist.

That would be great. It was the only science fiction show that I really liked, outside the original Star Trek. OK, nothing made any sense, but it was very entertaining, with a handful of exceptional episodes.

But how realistic is it for a 50+ man to carry on like Jack does on the show? We don’t want this to turn into Barnaby Jones. I wouldn’t mind if they introduced another partner for him and he trained him for the eventual transition to a new character.

They could do a series about fighting cocaine dealers who are holding Hollywood stars hostage. Plenty of opportunities to mention Kiefer Sutherland.

Mark Shera was brought on to take some of the labor off Buddy Ebsen and Jones carried on for some time.

I absolutely despise it when remakes try to be too much like the original. I am sorry, but they couldn’t keep the show anywhere near decent without the substance of the first few seasons. I could take maybe a cameo with some of the original actors, but that’s it. Sort of how I would have liked a cameo with Kevin Bacon in the new footloose.

Not to mention he would scare terrorists into pissing themselves, you know the fact that their own guys got a Dexter job on them? :)

You have hit the nail on the head. Watch a clip from the first season and then the last season. It maybe hard to admit, but its true, Jack Bauer is currently looking a little over the hill. We don’t want 24 to get as stupid as the last Rocky movie, with senior citizen Rocky Balboa climbing back in the ring. Someone earlier brought up “Dirty Harry”, the same applies here. An 80 year old Harry Callaghan just will not cut it.

THere’s no reason why 24 can’t be like the James Bond series. No one has a major cow each time they switch out lead actors. Why not have them all be named Jack Bauer. Well that would be freaky.
