Johnny Depp Scores Lowest Wide Release Opening Since 1999

“Mortdecai” is loosely translated into “10 deaths.” That’s an understatement. Johnny Depp’s terrible comedy marks his lowest wide release opening since 1999’s “Astronaut’s Wife”– that’s excluding limited releases of smaller non tentpole movies like “Finding Neverland” (a hit ultimately), “The Libertine” (a disaster), and “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” (a daffodil in the wind, box office wise).

I knew Mortdecai was a disaster when it got a January release.

When was the last time Depp had a hit that wasn’t a pirate movie?

I’ve been watching Pirates of the Caribbean tonight.

Actually fun fairly family friendly flicks.

I don’t like Depp politically, and the personal side he’s revealed is less than palatable. But I’ll admit that what I’ve seen of his acting, is pretty impressive. My overriding thought is that he should either be a) a theater/stageplay performer or b) was born way-many years too late to be the acclaimed character actor he would’ve been, back in the day.

They blew that movie so far away from it’s concept it shouldn’t have had that title.

He can be pretty good in the right role - Donnie Brasco was a decent film, although Al Pacino pretty much carried it.
