Deflategate fallout: NFL focusing on Patriots' locker-room attendant
Fox Sports ^ | 1/26/2015 | Jay Glazer

Deflategate has taken another twist.

FOX Sports has learned that the NFL has zeroed in on a New England Patriots locker-room attendant in connection with the scandal of improperly inflated footballs used in the AFC championship game against Indianapolis.

The person of interest was already interviewed by the league. The NFL is trying to determine whether any wrongdoing by this individual occurred, sources tell FOX Sports.

There is surveillance video showing the attendant taking the footballs from the official's locker room into another room at Gillette Stadium before bringing them out to the field, sources tell FOX Sports.

Does not matter. Cheating, lying and not enforcing laws is now American as apple pie.

So brady has a preferred psi, but didn’t notice these? hmm seems contradictory to me.

All the more reason to do a complete-thorough investigation! If others are involved what motive money-—Apparently there were complaints earlier in the season One local commentator mentioned two other teams involved somehow

The climate change between the warm locker room and the field... 25 or 30 deg. (F), might account for 1 pound, but not 2.

25 degrees accounts for 1.2 PSI

Experiments show that being wet for an extended period (less than two hours) ups that to 1.7 - 1.9 PSI as the leather case stretches and relieves support of the urethane bladder. The Pats claim that their ball processing is up to about another half PSI - which would equate to about a 10 degree warming, minus delay between the buffing and the balls being submitted.

Has anyone seen an experiment with those conditions which show otherwise?

While the Colts balls defied the same laws of physics, as have balls in every cold game in history.

Everyone arguing that the ambient temperature caused 2 psi of deflation is ignoring the fact that the Colts balls, which were tested at the same temperature before the game, were measured and found to be still in compliance.

Do you live in a vacuum?

I don’t mean a rhetorical one, but an actual physical one? If not then the pressure value for the equations is 27.2, for 12,5 PSI, since the football is surrounded by an atmosphere of pressure.

There’s an assumption or two which aren’t correct unless th Colts were messing with pressure. The assumption that doesn’t work is that the Colts balls started at room temperature and within specs if they were at 13.5 PSI at halftime. Rather than explaining how they defied physics demonstrated for centuries, a simpler explanation was that hey were never warm. If they had been at 75F, then cooling to 50F would nessarily have caused the pressure to drop 1.2 PSI, even without getting wet.

There’s really no room for debate there. If they ended at 13.5 and had been warm at inspection, they could not have been within specs At inspection. It’s basic math, which accurately represents physical reality as experimentally shown literally millions of times...probably to you as well.

The two teams are Baltimore, whose coach has said they didn’t notice ( but in theory could be lying), and the earlier game against the Colts - which was played at the Colts, meaning they supplied the ball attendants and controlled the balls to the extent that the refs didn’t.

Clarification: There’s an assumption or two which aren’t correct unless the Colts were messing with pressure. The assumption that doesn’t work is that the Colts balls started at room temperature and within specs at that time, if they were at 13.5 PSI at halftime.

I think we’re roughly in agreement that 25 degrees is in the vicinity of 1 psi, more or less.

New reports I heard today is that of the 11 balls that were said to be low, only one was “2 pounds” low, and all of the others were closer to 1 pound. Can’t say if that report is accurate, as I only heard it once in passing.

What I hadn’t heard (but can well believe) is the stretching/contracting of the leather case with moisture. I could believe it, though.

As to the Pats’ mistreatment (a/k/a ball prep), the key is whether or not it heats the ball up, what that does to the internal air temperature, how long between buffing and the time they give the ball to the refs, and what the ball’s cooldown time constant is.

I’m sure the NFL has its experts working on all of these parameters. Perhaps a /S here... politics counts, too.

I heard that inquiries were being made of other teams and it could be in relation to video evidence. Could there be video of the same attendant disappearing with the footballs in other games? If so, it’s BINGO.

I wonder how long they keep the video surveillance records.

You are making a few assumptions of your own. Who said they ended at 13.5 psi? It is more likely that the Patriots balls were deflated while the Colts balls were not.

You’re half right. I mangled my statement. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Let’s try again: if the balls started at 13.5 PSI at 75°F, they would still deflate below 12.5 PSI upon the air inside them cooling to 50°F, as even without water being added, just with the effects of the air cooling alone, the drop would be 1.2 PSI which is more than the entire range of allowed values. Thus the Colts balls could not have both cooled 25°F, and both started and ended within specs. It’s even moreso when the effects of the water on leather are taken into account for the balls which were used.

A lot of Freepers sound like the Reverend Al preaching Ferguson or Skittles.

Whether or not Belickick and/or Brady are guilty 0% or 100% ... That’s not the point.

A lot of Freepers, at this moment, sound like either the Rev Al or a pack of his resentment-drunk sheep, drooling so much for something to be true that it’s drowning their judgment.

He’s a witch! He’s a witch!

Earlier today I posted the following response on another string.

A data scientist/statistician ran the numbers on all NFL teams/games going back to 2010.
This has to do with offensive plays/per fumbles lost. The Patriots are off the chart with 187 offensive plays per fumble lost. The next closest team is Houston (enclosed stadium team) with 140 O/P per F/L. The average for teams in the NFL is 105 O/P per F/L. If the data is correct this anomaly can't be ignored by the NFL. The Patriots, in my opinion, have been scamming the system for several years with under inflated balls.

This NFL/Patriot BS we have a low echelon person of interest is totally ridiculous ... in the extreme.

The primary effect that the patriots were measuring, is the heating of the air in the ball, which they claim was a net of about 0.5 PSI, which is about 10°F - a not unreasonable figure. They also noted about a 1 PSI change and change back from moving the ball to the cold and back (loss of 1.5 psi when the ball was outside, and loss of .5 psi when the ball had warmed back up)... these appear to have been done without water.
