today 26 Jan 1944-"Lieutenant Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to a prepared position in a woods while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him to his right one of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. Lieutenant Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, Lieutenant Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer which was in danger of blowing up any instant and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to the German fire from three sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. ..."

I was born in 1938 and just turned 7 years old when the war in Europe ended. “I think “the greatest generation” were adults in the 1940s.

On 28 May 1971, Murphy was killed when the private plane in which he was a passenger crashed into Brush Mountain, near Catawba, Virginia, 20 miles west of Roanoke in conditions of rain, clouds, fog and zero visibility. The pilot and four other passengers were also killed. The aircraft was a twin-engine Aero Commander 680 flown by a pilot who had a private-pilot license and a reported 8,000 hours of flying time, but who held no instrument rating. The aircraft was recovered on 31 May.

I actually hiked up Brush Mountain to view the site of the crash in 2004. Saw the memorial marker and the many things left in honor of this great hero.

The Greatest Generation refers to those who were born during the Great Depression AND who served in WWII. Only one of your mostly insulting list qualifies by birth year but certainly not by service to his country, as David Dellenger opted for Federal prison time instead of the military. Every other person was born in the late 1930s and 1940s; Korea and Viet Nam were the wars they dealt with, one way or the other.

I seem to recall Brokaw labeled the people who lived during the depression then went on to fight WWII and those that stayed behind and produced for the war effort as the Greatest Generation.

But let’s see if I have this straight.
Greatest Generation coined by Tom Brokaw = not ok
Silent Generation coined by Time magazine = ok.

Got it.

The only reason that he was believable in any of those westerns he played in was because of his war record. He wasn’t Clint Eastwood or any of a dozen or so actors that played bad-asses. He just was one.

I consider those who went through the Great Depression and served during World War II to be members of the Greatest Generation. The ones you mentioned might have been born during the war, but they didn't serve.

And I can't imagine Jim Hendrix, et al. exhibiting the same courage, perseverance and all around toughness of the Greatest Generation. McCain survived a POW camp, but the others are/were wussies.

There is no such generation called the greatest generation, it was a phrase that Brokaw created in 1998.

Hendrix was a paratrooper, but none of that changes what generation they were in, the Silent generation actually has a great record of military service, as does the boomer generation.

Silent generation is the accepted name for that generation of 1925-1945, greatest generation doesn’t mean anything, it includes people from several generations.

Heck, where does all this leave my Dad, born in 1917, who fought in WWII? What generation was he a part of?

Yours and my dad, who enlisted in 1939, are usually called the GI generation, 1901-1924.

Let’s see who is who on this list:

Hendrix - extremely talented and died from a drug overdose. STUPID
Janis Joplis - very talents and died from a drug overdose.
Crosby, Stills Nash & Young. Talents. My wife liked Southern Cross; I liked “Woodstock”. Some really good songs, some sucked. Voices often sounded like someone stepped on a flow of chickens.
The Beatles - one of the most talented rock groups around. Nothing against the talented writer John Lennon except that he married that leftist fool, Yoko Ono.
Elvis - THE KING. What else can you say? “Jail House Rock”, my first 45. “All Shook Up”, “Burnin’ Love”, “US Male”, “In the Ghetto”, his Christmas album, etc. Also a GI in the 50’s.

Van Morrison - very talented.
Jim Morrison - also talented but died of a drug overdose.

Jane Fonda: - Beautiful airhead, used up sexual toy, self-proclaimed communist. Hypocritical capitalist.

Pete Seeger - Very talented but died a hardcore Communist (see www.keywiki.org for some information on his lifelong association with various communist parties, fronts and causes).

The Chicago Seven - Contained hardcore reds (Seale, Dellinger, Davis, Froines, Hayden, and hardcore clowns (Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin).

John McCain - Vietnam veteran/pilot, and POW, US Senator. Brave man but a lousy politician.

Out of all of these ideological people, I have met Fonda, Seeger, Rennie Davis/Dave Dellinger (C -7); and Adm. John McCain (CINCOMPAC). One hero and the rest, traitors.

The ideological people were NOT members of the “Greatest Generation”. They were traitors, even though Seeger served in WW II, as did the grandfather Adm. McCain and his son. Grandson was in Vietnam.

There is a different between these groups. What hurt the musicians was massive drug-use, which explains why some of the best aren’t around anymore.

Why the hell do you persist in pursing your inane off the rails comments on a thread commemorating Audie L. Murphy’s courage and his achievements?

You’ve effectively killed the thread and embarrassed yourself.

I’ve read enough of your posts over the years to know your heart is in the right place, but tonight you screwed the pooch.

My mistake, I didn’t make my last comment clear enough. I originally thought Frederick “Boots” Blese made the comment.

I corrected a post that placed Audie Murphy in the wrong generation.

That needed to be corrected.

Don’t confuse almost all of those you just listed who are members of Audie Murphy’s generation, the Silent generation, with Pete Singer, who is a part of the GI generation, or the “greatest generation” if it means the “GI generation” as some try to define it.
