To: Organic Panic

I live in Houston and when they evacuated Houston for the last hurricane, there was a solid line of cars to Austin (158 miles). It took 25 hours for my parents to make it to Austin. If everyone in Houston had left, they would have never made it. Leaving is not an option. There will be curfews to deal with as well.

I've often wondered... If the major arteries,like US 290 or I-10, are so clogged with traffic, couldn't you make better time over the county roads? Say, by exiting on 249 up thru Tomball, then proceeding to Austin on US 79 -- which shouldn't be at all congested.
