Does your MacBook Pro freak out with distorted graphics or randomly restart? Then you’ll want to take advantage of Apple’s new repair program.

After deeming that a “small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video, or unexpected system restarts,” Apple will start fixing parts for free on select MacBook Pro models.

image: https://stackcommerce-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/ad/image/151/singleproduct_web_the-6-ft-mfi-certified-ios-android-charging-cable_1423083568.png A class action lawsuit was filed against Apple last October over graphics issues with 2011 MacBooks. A petition on Change.org for Apple to offer free repairs currently has over 38,000 signatures. A thread on Apple’s support forum about the issue has over 4 million views. Now Apple will repair any MacBook Pro purchased between February 2011 and December 2013. The program covers Retina as well as non-Retina models.

While AppleCare would typically be required to get free repairs, the program means that anyone can get their affected MacBooks fixed at no cost. The computer must have “distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen, “no video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on,” or restart “unexpectedly” for it to qualify.

Any Apple authorized service provider, not just Apple’s own stores, will do the repairs. You can check your MacBook’s eligibility on Apple’s website. The programs lasts until February 27, 2016 or until three years after the MacBook’s original purchase date.

This happened to my out-of-warranty 2012 retina MBP last spring. Apple replaced everything for free.

From what my understand is, Apple got a batch of bad graphic chips. . . and will be replacing the logic boards that contain them since it is integrated graphics on the logic boards.

Thanks for posting this. My MacBook Pro is among the models affected. Mine isn’t experiencing any issues, other than general sluggishness and the “beach ball of death” far too much. Don’t suppose I could bring it in under this “recall” of sorts and have it looked over?

Some of the MacBook Pros failed after the warranty expired. Apple is extending the warranty for those computers to cover the out of warranty failures.

I would, under general principles.

About 1-1/2 years ago I took my son-in-law’s MacBook Pro into Apple for service. The screen was totally dark. Even though it was well beyond warranty being a couple years old, they fixed it free of charge. It was a bad graphics card, and they were offering to fix them for free by replacing the graphics card. Great customer service.

"Any reference to the "Cult of Apple" is intended to include all Apple users."

Actually, it's just you. Days after our last pleasant tête-à-tête, I have noticed a ridiculous number of Apple posts on this mainly political forum. Then I noticed it's mostly you.

So I looked back at your posting history. You're a full-bred cultist. Four to five pages back, and all of your posts are for Apple. ALL of them. (Except for one brief foray into a Samsung bashing thread.) And your posts aren't short. It's all you do. All day. Every day. It's a sickness. At least Star Traveler comments on other threads of interest, like he's not totally obsessed with Apple. For that, he gets respect.

You on the other hand...

Shouldn't you take your obsession to an appropriately themed forum? Or do your Apple overlords pay you to push Apple propaganda here and on other forums? This is starting to look suspiciously like a paid social marketer...

Busted.

I appreciate the ping from Swordmaker. Was able to let my daughter know her old computer can be fixed. Sounds like you have issues. If you don't like the thread, just ignore it. By posting on it you reveal your intentions are both insipid and insidious.

I suppose you are the judge of everything non-political here. Does that include the garden, prep, financial and WWII threads to name a few?

No no - one of the reasons I enjoy FreeRepublic is that I get exposed to a variety of stuff. I like that.

But think about it: all the guy does is post on Apple topics. That’s it. Period. And it’s not short posts. And if you say anything contrary to his line about Apple, he goes ballistic, posting 3,000 word essays in response and drawing in others to the argument.

It’s either an unhealthy, cult-like obsession, or he’s being paid to be a social marketer. If it’s the latter, I’d prefer NOT to have paid social marketers on this forum - how about you?

Of course, I don’t RUN the forum, but I’ve been a member for 15 years. When something this suspect pops up, you have to wonder if we’ve been infiltrated by a social marketer who is here to push a product.

That’s all.

There are over 500 FReepers on the Mac ping list that are interested and I’m sure most of us donate to keep FR up and running…
