Ford cars slow when they see speed-limit signs
BBC News ^ | 3/25/15 | BBC

Ford is to sell a car that can read road signs and adjust its speed accordingly to ensure the vehicle is not driving too fast.

The speed-limiting tech can be activated via the steering wheel and briefly overridden by pressing firmly on the accelerator.

The car company suggests the facility will help drivers avoid fines and could reduce the number of accidents.

However, one expert said the innovation might only serve as a "stopgap".

"There's a plan for speed restrictions to be beamed to your car's computer systems and controlled from there, rather than requiring street sign visual recognition systems," said Paul Newton, an automotive industry analyst at the IHS consultancy.

"This would be part an extension of the networks that will connect vehicles, allowing cars to warn those behind them if they are slowing down, which is all part of a move toward autonomous vehicles that drive themselves." The new vehicles will alert the driver to detected road signs via a read-out in the centre of the car's speedometer

Such a system, however, is some way off.

Ford's technology will become available to the public this August, when it launches the second generation of its S-Max cars in Europe.

A spokesman for the US car company told the BBC the facility would probably be extended to other models around the world.

sounds like what I am thinking of getting , what make and model is it and are the parts easy to get if you don’t mind me asking?

Want a truck with no modern stuff, easy to work on and no way for these manufacturers or Govt to track where you have been.

Me too. I have Mom’s 2004 Hyundai Sonata (she passed away in November 2013) and plan on keeping it as long as I can. If I need another car, I’m thinking of the 1980’s era. I did see a 1966/67 Plymouth for sale once, if I had the money, I would have snagged it, I think it was a Fury.

Odd, I think Subarus already have that system. I’ve never seen one of those lesbian mobiles even go the speed limit.

Makes me think of the lynch mob that insisted the ‘three second rule’ meant that Bruce Jenner committed a felony. Try that distance on LA area roads.

I think some motor company thought about doing this 30-40 years ago. It was about as popular as hemorrhoids. They quickly dropped the idea.

The number one problem, I believe, is that frequently, out of safety, people have to exceed the speed limit, sometimes just for a few seconds, otherwise because they think they *have* to.

“Oh, gee, the wife has gone into labor, but the speed limit en route to the hospital is only 25 mph. So, sorry, honey. I guess the baby will have to wait! It’s only 10 miles!”

Exceeding the speed limit is one of the primary ways to avoid other people’s accidents.

Like a carrot on a stick, but you replace the carrot with a 120mph sign photo

My neighbor builds cars from the chassis frame up, then puts a classic car body on it. Even the frame is chromed.

“I lived in L.A. for forty years, the freeway is rarely over 50”

You have to be kidding. I spent 15 years commuting between Newport Beach and El Monte on the 405, 605 and 10 Freeways. It was a 42 mile drive each way. I left my home at 6:30 AM and it took me 45 minutes from home to office which included a 5 mile leg of non-freeway roadways. Most cars were being driven at 70 to 75 mph or faster.

My trip home at 4:15 PM was slower due to bottlenecks on the 605 at the 5 and 405 crossovers. Still, I was home in just over an hour.

Ya. Or you are passing someone in the oncoming lane and need to speed up to get around quickly. So sorry, no faster than 45mph — head on collision in 3...2..1 seconds!

>>>How many dead journalists will this result in? If they can restrict your speed, what is stopping them from increasing it to “ludicrous” speed?<<<

Light speed is too slow you know.

The prob is parts are scarce for old vehicles.

Keep an eye on those 3D printers. It won't be before the home-class machines can print with metal.

and causing random cars to slow down or even stop?

Imagine the security threat if this was done on bridges and in tunnels.
