The new atheist just doesn’t care
National Post ^ | March 26, 2015 | John Moore

In his Saturday column Conrad Black inveighed against “militant atheists”. He called them “shabby” and “shallow”. He attacked their “gratuitous disparagements of Christianity”. I’m not sure who set Black off this time. To be sure there is a species of self satisfied nose-tweakers on the atheist lecture and debating circuit but frankly militant atheism is just so passé. The fastest growing religious identity in the world is the new atheist. We really just don’t care.

Black and others have insisted non belief is a faith in and of itself. I can’t speak for all non believers but I have neither a holy book nor hymnal. I observe no special holidays and attend no services. My atheism is simply an absence of religion in my life. Outside of leaving me a few hours to myself on Sunday mornings this absence is not some kind of void that must be filled with something else.

It’s faith regardless how he stacks it.

Oh, he cares all right. Maybe the author of this piece thinks he’s neutral, but you MUST make a choice, one way or the other. There is no such thing as idling your engine when it comes to the big questions about our origins.

What about the garden variety atheists who is loudly Christianphobic? This order of atheists makes it their mission to ‘get offended and threatening to sue in order to stop others from publicly celebrating or even sharing their christian faith. He didn’t talk much about them. I don’t care how ‘angry’ they are if it’s a private affair.

Disagree. The answer to the question of where we/the universe come(s) from could be simply, ‘we don’t know yet’. Works for me.

Looking at the comments at the source, clearly the atheists care, and are “angry” and “militant atheists”.

The author confuses atheism with agnosticism.

Agnosticism is a lack of faith — like being born without legs.

Atheism is a denial of God’s existence — which is a belief requiring faith.

The Scriptures simply say they have been blinded...and the result is that they really do not care...yet.

I often wonder, when the atheist followers of Madalyn Murray O’Hair came for her and her family, with the strangling cords and chainsaws, did she say “OH MY GOD!” or “OH MY ME!”

You neglected to include “barf alert” in the title. It is needed.

Which atheist books are the best-sellers? Dawkins and Sam Harris, who are so spittingly vituperative that they have made clowns of themselves. Then again, maybe their book sales come from people like me who read them for comedic entertainment.

That clown is the reason CFRB lost its decades-long hold as the #1 radio station here.

If they “didn’t care,” they wouldn’t be attacking Christians on Facebook. They “care” in only that they gain some weird satisfaction from their merciless, unmitigated trolling.

Agnosticism is a lack of faith

Agnosticism is the abscence of knowledge (gnosis). It isn't doubt and it isn't a lack of faith. It is the state of being in which there is not enough knowledge to draw a conclusion. In this case, a conclusion as to the existence of God.

Atheism is a denial of God’s existence — which is a belief requiring faith.

Atheism is what you do (the conclusion you draw) with the knowledge you have. Some believe (have faith)- Theists, some don't believe - Atheists.

“There’s a simple test to tell if one is an agnostic or not. Do you think you know for sure if any gods exist?

If so, then you’re not an agnostic.

Do you think you know for sure that gods do not or even cannot exist? If so, then you’re not an agnostic.

Everyone who can’t answer ‘yes’ to one of those questions is a person who may or may not believe in one or more gods, but since they don’t also claim to know for sure they are agnostic — an agnostic theist or an agnostic atheist.”

Phil Robertson (Duck Dynasty) has also a few words for the militant atheist.
