Can Canada teach the rest of us to be nicer?
BBC Travel ^ | 19 March 2015 | Eric Weiner

Every August my family embarks on that great American ritual: the road trip. And we always head north. Canada may not be the most exotic of destinations, but sometimes, exotic is overrated. Canada tempts us with familiarity, blissfully cool weather and, most of all, a deep reservoir of niceness.

We experience Canadian nice as soon as we reach customs. The US border guards are gruff and all business. The Canadians, by contrast, are unfailingly polite, even as they grill us about the number of wine bottles we’re bringing into the country. One year, we had failed to notice that our 9-year-old daughter’s passport had expired. They, nicely, let us enter anyway. The niceness continues for our entire trip, as we encounter nice waiters, nice hotel clerks, nice strangers.

The Canadian customs people are mostly a-holes

I cleared Canadian Customs last summer and the guy was very professional and polite. When I cleared American Customs I had the same experience.

I’ve taught a number of seminars in Canada, and they really are on average nicer than Americans.

I've talk many seminars in the US and for the most part, I find them on average nicer than Canadians. Go figure...

But if any of you really think highly of Canada, just realize that the politicians there are just as loony as any south of the border..... Here's the wonderful premier of Ontario in action pushing her agenda.... http://www.therecord.com/news-story/5538895-wynne-slams-conversion-therapy-as-dangerous/

Toronto is cold but polite and these days pretty much continually under construction.

Canadian 8 course gourmet meal: six pack of Labatt Blue and a ham slice topped with a pineapple ring.
(I’m watching ‘Ricky’ from ‘Trailer Park Boys’ eat pickle slices from a jar with a stick. While driving.)

Thanks.

Canada was great to visit years ago; at one point we were getting C$150 for US$100. Nowadays they are close to par, and it is expensive for Americans. At least in the east, it doesn’t seem as nice as it had been, though friends tell me the west is great (better economy).

Question for the group: Can anyone recommend a military history that focuses on the Canadian landing at Juno Beach on D-Day?

That's a good question. A good starting point would be the Canada at War series; I would also recommend checking out the Juno Beach Centre.

I had a different experience. Canadian customs troll-witch intentionally slowed down my process so that I missed a connecting flight in Toronto.

As to US Customs types, I once literally dragged one royal a-hole into his supervisor’s office and forced him to apologize to some German friends of mine. I was hopping mad at how he treated my friends for absolutely no reason.

I go to Canada on vacation a lot, and I’ve met customs jerks on both sides of the equation. I think customs jerks are customs jerks in any country.

That said, Newfoundlanders just may be the most friendly people on the planet.
