They got the NH brewery right. Smuttynose makes good beer. One of my graduates was a founder!

Fritz and Erin Rahr founded Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. in the fall of 2004 (from the website), so that is another Rahr.

I did see that in searching. Seems like the surname Rahr destined a family for the brewery business.

St. Arnold’s, Karbach, Real Ale, 512, Buffalo Bayou, 8th Wonder, Southern Star, No Label, Fort Bend Brewing, Lone Pint are all within the Austin/Houston corridor. I’d say each of them have at least a single brew I like - and for some of them MANY brews I like.

If you like Shiner Bock (one of the worst of the Shiner beers - try the Kosmos - that stuff is delicious), then I feel sorry for you.

Amazingly, they still sell a lot of Rolling Rock around here. Not like before, but I can only figure it is clueless ObaMao voters or people so inebriated that they go more by the label than the taste.

Enjoyed all the comments about people drinking MORE once BO was sworn in. I was deathly afraid that would happen to me and I'd turn into an alcoholic . . . the reason I took the pledge!

In a previous life, I worked in Japan and we seriously looking into importing Sam Adams. One test case which was consolidated with other sample prospects convinced us it was NOT a good idea.

In general, beer does not travel very well without a major loss of flavor and quality. Ales do fare a lot better than lagers, though.

Honestly, as for a PA beer... I am surprised Yuengling Lager isn’t a contender. I can be halfway across the country and people talk about Yuengling.

Then again this list seems to be focused on microbreweries and handlebar mustachioed crap.

I'd agree. Most of these lists follow the assumption that if it isn't made by a microbrewery, it can't make the list.

As I posed before, water quality is the #1 factor in flavor. All the other stuff helps, but takes a backseat.

Yuengling, Rolling Rock (back when it was bottled in Latrobe, PA) and Sam Adams are just three examples of great beers which don't fit the microbrewery mold. I am sure there are others.

It is sort of a reverse of the error on the other end of the scale which people make when they buy a label or brand and not take a blind quality taste test. Today's uninformed fans of Rolling Rock, for example.

Aww, I missed it. But a belated Happy National Beer Day anyway...

April 7, 1933, the day the Cullen-Harrison Act was enacted ending Prohibition... Right up there with July 4th if you ask me! (j/k, sort of... Look at those happy faces!)
