NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Less than two months before he was killed, Walter Lamer Scott turned 50 and wanted everyone around him to join in the celebration.
It was February, and Scott's family had taken him to dinner at a Japanese steakhouse. As waiters and other staff gathered around to sing "Happy Birthday," Scott jumped up on the table and started dancing.

Seems like a priorities problem there. But hey, even for all of that, he would still be alive today if he hadn’t tried to run from police.
So, preventable problems (pay the child support instead of buying a new car), don’t run from police, and he would still be alive today.
At the time he was pulled over, Scott owed more than $18,000 in child support and court fees. He last paid child support in 2012 and a bench warrant for his arrest was issued in early 2013.'
Yet he could afford that Mercedes Benz he was driving..makes you wonder what was the real story about that car..when he was pulled over he told the cop two different versions of how he got that car
Not terribly familiar with the story. Why would a person have to account to the police how they acquired their vehicle?
Well in all fairness a 1991 Mercedes is not exactly a new car. And only one of his kids is under 20 so we are talking back child support. He definitely should have been making payments but he probably figured if he got thrown in jail he would lose his job. In all honesty putting these guys out of work by throwing them in jail is not a good idea. It would be better to garnish their wages for a monthly payment til the support is paid off.
Whatever I think we can all agree that the penalty for owing child support and rabbiting from a cop is not death.

I can see jail for withholding money that you have (like you're earning good money and refusing to pay)... but what if you just don't have it?
Isn't that the same as debtors' prison?
And how does throwing a delinquent unemployed father in jail help get money to the mother?

It was not his vehicle. Nor was their any insurance or other paperwork in the vehicle he was using.
Happens on FR a lot. A 10-15 year old Mercedes or BMW worth $10k tops is called a new luxury car. I guess it proves the point that some brands retain their snob appeal if not their price.
You got it, basically. Child support enforcement is a big scam run by the government. 20 years of “cracking down on deabeat dads” and collections are about the same as they’ve always been, except the gubberment actually gets to handle the child support before deciding whether to turn it over to mom.
You mean the centralized liberal utopia is not working in the matter of child support collections?

running from the cops should be an automatic death penalty!!!
If the car isn’t titled in your name, and you don’t have insurance on it or proof of ownership, you probably should be prepared to talk to the cops as to whose it is and why you are driving it.
Look the cop probably murdered the guy, but it’s not like this guy was a model citizen.

I think that piece of advice was enshrined in the Constitution by the Founders:
Section. 2.
The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority;—to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls;—to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction;—to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party;—to Controversies between two or more States;— between a State and Citizens of another State,—between Citizens of different States,—between Citizens of the same State claiming Lands under Grants of different States, and between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizens or Subjects.
In all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, and those in which a State shall be Party, the supreme Court shall have original Jurisdiction. In all the other Cases before mentioned, the supreme Court shall have appellate Jurisdiction, both as to Law and Fact, with such Exceptions, and under such Regulations as the Congress shall make.
The Trial of all Crimes, except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury; and such Trial shall be held in the State where the said Crimes shall have been committed; but when not committed within any State, the Trial shall be at such Place or Places as the Congress may by Law have directed.
**addendum** And if you run from the Police, they can Shoot you in the back without benefit of Trial. And we're going to make sure that the entire Countryside, and under every Rock, is crawling with Police, even though we can't have that many Police right now, or maybe for 180 years, because of that pesky old Balanced Budget Thingee.
