A lorry carrying 14 million honeybees scattered hundreds of hives when it overturned on a highway north of Seattle in the US state of Washington early on Friday.
The lorry had just merged onto the Interstate 5 when it tipped on its side, dumping its load of 448 hives, officials said.
The driver was not hurt, and authorities are investigating whether or not speed was the cause of the crash.
The company that owns the insects, Belleville Honey and Beekeeping Supply of Burlington, sent beekeepers to recover as many as possible.
It is believed that the total value of the bees was around $92,000 (approximately £62,000).
As the sun rose and the weather warmed, the bees became more agitated, stinging whoever was in their path.
“Everybody’s been stung,” said Sgt. Ben Lewis of the State Patrol. “This is a first.”

Bees
Help! My bulldog and I are playing `George and Lennie’ ...
He just brought me a very young baby bunny. I took it away from him, and he immediately went to the bunny burrow and was looking for another. He was gentle with it, it was uninjured.
So I put the bunny back in the burrow burgled by my bulldog, and I saw three or more tiny bunnies.
I will make sure he doesn’t molest them further this evening.
Any lepus experts: Will the mother rabbit notice the tumult and move her children tonight to a more secure location? If not, how does one prepare baby bunnies for consumption?
Hurry, I’m almost out of `b’s.
Not good. We really need as many healthy non-africanized bees as we can possibly have.
