GOP hits new FEMA policy making climate action a condition for states to receive federal grants

Republican lawmakers are criticizing a new policy at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that forces states to acknowledge climate change in order to receive some federal disaster funds.

The policy, set to take effect next March, requires state governors to address the role of climate change in their disaster-mitigation plans in order to qualify for federal disaster-preparedness grant money.

A group of Republican senators are questioning the change in a letter to FEMA Director Craig Fugate, arguing that the new policy will complicate the bureaucratic process of applying for mitigation assistance and force state leaders to adopt an ideological position in an ongoing and unsettled debate.

The senators go on to ask Fugate to “provide the specific statutory authority the agency [FEMA] relied upon to require consideration of climate change as a requisite for receipt of preparedness funds.”

Interestingly, the senators also insinuate that the policy change — like so many policy tweaks in the Obama era — was done without consulting state leaders on the front lines of implementing disaster relief plans.

I call this the “carrot and stock” routine. “You do this and we will award you with money.” Much like fire stations being required to be handicap accessible in order for that county fire department to receive funds.

I think the only thing they fear is lack of revenue. Enough taxpayers would have to revolt that they would not be able to keep up with the prosecutions.

Any money they have they collected from the citizens of these individual States. They forget that.

What’s new. That’s why there should be no EPA. It didn’t exist before...and wouldn’t be missed....and we’d probably save a LOT of money.

“The “answer” is to put “FEAR” back into the forefront of a concern of our representatives.”

I don’t have to worry about that - Senator Cruz is my senator and the rep is okay, moving toward Cruz. Cornyn is the other senator, and he is fairly useless at present but I think he will clear his thinking about where he should stand after Cruz makes a showing in the near future including Cruz’s Texas majority.

The only entity truly fearworthy is God.

There is plenty of evidence, to a degree better than the “climate change models” that the good Lord made the earth very resistant to thermal runaway under a given level of solar output by those mysterious things we call clouds. One thing that these clouds can’t do, however, is change the overall radiation flux from the sun. Change in solar output from century to century and longer can run the earth’s temperature up and down like a yo-yo.

Am I seeing this right? If the feds didn’t tax us at such a high degree and these federal grants were nonexistent, we would be able to retain more of our hard earned money and have more to spend in whatever states we reside. The more money we spend for goods and services in our state means more money in state taxes that go towards OUR state. In this scenario, the state wouldn’t have to rely on federal grants and the federal government wouldn’t be in as good of a position to micromanage, right?

“Fear” is the ultimate foundation of our society.

You pay your taxes due to “fear” of the consequences.

You obey the government and the “law” due to fear of the consequences (at the end of a “gun”).

You do just about any expected behavior in our society with the ultimate root of “fear” of the consequences as the primary motivator.

There are some limited exceptions, but those are up to the altruistic behaviors of individuals due to several reasons, but those pale in comparison to the true motivations of behavior in our society, and the root cause of those behaviors is “FEAR”.

It’s an “inconvenient fact”, but it is a fact. Once this truism is actually understood by citizens, the first steps to limiting the capacity of their elected government to inflict “fear” upon those who elect them is both comprehended and taken into account when establishing and perpetuating said government, along with the reciprocating principle that those who are elected to govern MUST do so under the “fear” of the consequences of betraying the trust and “power” that has been bestowed upon them by those who have chosen them to govern.

This isn’t a complex reality to comprehend. It has simply been our own shortcomings that have allowed our government to believe they have nothing to fear from those who elect them (not to mention those who opposed them at election tine), and thus those who ascend to a government “job” no longer “fear” the populace as a whole and choose to do what they want without “fear” of any retribution for the most part.

This must change or we have nobody to blame but ourselves for our eventual slavery to our own elected government.

And this is the problem, by being able to manipulate fear, a government can get as tyrannous as it wishes.

The fear of God is the only way to cut through this Gordian knot.

Nonsense.

Get your head out of your fourth point of contact and comprehend that which I state.

What I state has absolutely nothing to do with “religion” nor belief.

What I state has everything to do with mankind and how we govern ourselves, within or without the purview or guidance of “God”.

GOD (not “religion” nor “belief”) trumps all these petty little fears.

Look in a mirror and then take your own advice about getting your head out of your rear.

Again, nonsense.

Concentrate on humanity and their foibles.

This is beneath Jesus or the almighty, and is much more rooted in our base desires and day to day existence.

The worst of the perpetrators use the twisted word of “God” for their own demented purposes, and it is upon us to fix that problem.

Do not look to someone else, specifically “God”, to do the work we must do ourselves, specifically for ourselves.

And really are you that ignorant of American history? How it robustly acknowledged God to an extent that none other, save Israel perhaps, has?

And that put American fear in its rightful place. Until the modern times, when even people like you who ought to know better do not fear God any more.

Agree. But most of the bureaucrats in these rogue agencies aren’t even elected. They do what they want to do; making rules and regulations, and they have no fear of being fired. They do so no matter who is in elected office.

That is a cop out.

Do not look to “God” to do what is right, or to fix what is wrong with our society.

Take “his” advice if necessary, but take it upon ourselves to fix the problem.

Do not wait or pray for someone else to fix the problem.

Take the bull by the horns and do what is right!
