America's biggest ranch, which is larger than New York City, goes on sale for $713million in Texas

The Waggoner Ranch is the largest contiguous ranch in the United States spanning six counties in Northern Texas Listing marks end of decades-long court battle among heirs of cattle baron W.T. Waggoner who founded it in 1923 The estate includes the 510,000-acre ranch with two main compounds, hundreds of homes and 20 cowboy camps Also included are hundreds of quarter-horses, thousands of cattle, 1,200 oil wells and 30,000 acres of cultivated land It reportedly falls within 'super asset class', akin to selling the 'Statue of Liberty' of cowboy culture, it has been said

The estate includes the 510,000-acre ranch spread over six North Texas counties, with two main compounds, hundreds of homes, about 20 cowboy camps, hundreds of quarter-horses, thousands of heads of cattle, 1,200 oil wells and 30,000 acres of cultivated land, according to Dallas-based broker Bernie Uechtritz, who is handling the sale along with broker Sam Middleton of Lubbock.

Uechtritz says the estate falls within a 'super asset class,' akin to selling the 'Statue of Liberty' of cowboy culture. The Waggoner Ranch is the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. W.T. Waggoner's father, Dan Waggoner, started ranching in 1849, and the Waggoner name was prominent in the development of Hereford cattle and pedigree American quarter horses.

'What really sets it apart is that all this land has been kept together under one fence by one family for nearly 100 years, and its history in the settling of the West,' said court-appointed receiver Mike Baskerville.

If I had a spare billion or two lying around I would scoop this up immediately. Steve Balmer from Microsoft recently paid 2 billion for the San Diego Clippers. With that kind of money I would buy this ranch instead of a B-ball team

I always thought the King Ranch was the biggest. Bigger than Rhode Island. Am I way behind the times?

Really a shame. The Waggoner Ranch is iconic to us Quarter Horse people.

The King Ranch may not be contiguous.

I always thought the King Ranch was the biggest.

This is specified as the largest CONTIGUOUS ranch. I believe that the King Ranch operation may be larger in total acreage but is not contiguous.

Almost as large as the XIT ranch of old Texas. The XIT Ranch in the 1880s was the largest range in the world under fence and it all laid in the Texas Panhandle. It’s three million acres sprawled from the old Yellow House headquarters, near what is now Lubbock, Texas, northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle, in an irregular strip that was roughly 30 miles wide.
It covered portions of ten counties which apparently helped perpetuate the misbelief that the brand -XIT- stands for “Ten In Texas”. The brand, in fact, was originated to thwart rustlers.
In 1885 the first cattle, long of leg and long of horn, rolled onto the XIT. Thousands of hooves drummed up the trail and the longhorns were pushed on to the No. 1 division headquarters at Buffalo Springs, 32 miles north of Dalhart, now easily available by modern highway. Once the ranch ran 150,000 head of cattle.

XTO paid me a $25K/acre for the 3 year mineral rights to drill under my property back in the boom days.

Our 65 home HOA made $165K off 7 Junk Acres we were going to sell for a $1, so we wouldn’t have to pay to mow it... before we heard about “fracking”.

$700 Million is probably a bargain.

That’s what I have always thought, too—that the King Ranch was the biggest……..

As part of the deal you will get some nice farm equipment and some feed silos and their contents  (are those feed silos?)
