But if the kick-off does not go through the uprights and goes out of the end zone on the fly, the return team gets the ball at mid-field.

Any kick , punt or drop kick that goes thru the uprights should be 3 points. Add a little spice.

I hear you. The clock runs for 60 minutes, but, it takes over 3 hours to play the game. There’s lots of dead time, plus time when the clock is stopped.

I think in recent years, they have more commercial time outs than they used to have. Just anecdotal evidence, can’t prove it, but it seems like they have commercials now after every kickoff. They didn’t used to have commercials at that point.

They also bypass opening ceremonies and sometimes kickoff and punt returns.

So they tell the ref that they are going to try for two points and the ball will be spotted accordingly? There goes the element of surprise.
