But I wonder how one would be received if they out themselves, but are reasonably conservative up to and including believing that gay marriage should be something separate than traditional heterosexual marriage.

I have known many, many people that have conservative values and lead what appears to be a conservative life that vote democRAT.
They appear to be single issue voters. One such couple are a pair of homos, and with out a doubt, they vote rat simply because the rats promote homosexual agendas.
I know several farmers that are diehard conservatives at heart, but when it comes to subsidies, they know that particular slice of bread is buttered by the rats.
