ollowing the exciting news that Windows will be free for everyone currently on Windows 7 or 8.1, providing they upgrade within the first year, users should also be aware of a few features that will no longer work with Windows 10 after that upgrade.

The features that will no longer work are taken from the official specifications page on Microsoft's Windows website, and reproduced below. The good news is that in some cases alternatives are available.

The removal of these ‘features’ will be painless for me.

"It’s a great place to go and escape liberalism."

You know ... in a way you've touched on something here.

As much as I love FR and *most* of the people I've met here, there are times (like the last few days) when I just want to scream "ENOUGH!"

The pervasive thinkheadedness of some and the appalling ignorance of the masses who squander their franchise for a bag of Doritos and a six-pack.

Well ..... You know.

(sigh) Where is that old Nintendo?

Windows 7 desktop gadgets - I used the weather app but it has not worked for several months now. Still looking for a small lookalike replacement.

You can fix it by removing the Q2719662 QFE (the QFE disables Windows Sidebar), but at your own peril—there’s nothing stopping an attacker, using JScript eval()/unescape() function to execute native machine instructions.

God help you if you’re logged in as root, or a user with root-privileges!

Vista was beyond awful.

Vista was pretty bad, to be sure. But the absolute *worst* was ME. That piece of garbage was so poorly executed, they should have never done it at all. Then came XP, which gave them a second chance...

Why do you think MS finally put the original 16/32-bit Microsoft Windows product to bed in 2006?

Windows NT was simply better. I mean, it got to the point where computer stores sold units with Windows 2000 pre-installed, instead of Windows ME.

In 2003, when I got my second computer, there were still a few computers that came with Windows 2000, even though Windows XP had been around for little over a year. And XP was already highly successful in its own right, by then.

That was the exact liberalism I was referring to. Our own on FR.

Everyone involved with the fall of Commodore needs to be lined up and shot.

If I could buy a commodore with a contemporary 64-bit quad processor using a re-written Commodore Basic interpreted programming language, and being able to use modern peripherals and continue to be able write my own programs using Commodore interpreted Basic.

It was the most fun I ever had, programming a 128 Kb?-RAM commodore 128.
I worked as a civil engineer for over 45 years, and there was no common engineering problem that could not be written to run and print on the C64 or the C128 including astronomy problems, coordinate geometry, dynamics, hydraulics etc.

The current versions of Solitaire and Mindsweeper are worthless anyway.

The old original versions still run reasonably well on Win 7 and will probably still run on Win 10.

From Microsoft:
If I change my mind, can I cancel my reservation?
Yes, you can cancel your reservation at any time prior to installing Windows 10. Here’s how:
•Right click on the Get Windows 10 App or Windows icon located in right end of the taskbar.
•Select “Check your upgrade status”
•Select “Cancel reservation”

I agreed to the upgrade a few days ago. This morning I can not log on properly...getting BSoD and indicating registry problem. never had this problem before. Have it open now in safe mode should I try the ‘Open System Restore’?

Yes. Try a restore point from BEFORE you agreed...

UNLESS you updated since then, or added ANYTHING new, you might go back to the LATEST system restore point and try that first.

Went to May 31 restore point and it seems to have worked.

There are plenty of Store Apps that will play DVD/CDs and many are FREE.

...And highly rated.

Or use Sysinternals Disk2Vhd to convert it to a VHD... Then you can boot to VHD anytime you want and even run it on different hardware!

My brother is an old rocknroller in Tampa Bay area. He still uses an Amiga descendant that he has upgraded and configured himself for his music and for graphics. He is constantly fiddling and tweaking because that is what he does but he says it does everything he wants it to do and he is not interested in learning his way around all the problems that would come with going to a new system. He also makes documentaries for Stetson U on new equipment.

I don’t think I will go for the free upgrade to 10. I am transitioning slowly to Linux . I am not a geek so I don’t just zip through such a transition and I want to keep some of my ancient W95 compatible software like MGI photo but I don’t know how to attach it to Linux.
