January 1998, the name Monica Lewinsky was revealed to the world.
Equally important was the revelation of a Newsweek magazine story detailing the “affair”, written by a reporter that happened to be a friend of Linda Tripp.
Drudge did publicize all this and became famous / wealthy. It became more apparent that the days of legacy media dominance was drawing to a close. All we had was Rush at that point.
Also around that time was when Sonny Bono and a Kennedy died by skiing into trees.

I do not remember exactly when I started lurking on FR, but I do remember that I started feeling very uneasy in late 2000 and finally signed up when my spider sense told me it was time to make a commitment.
Congrats! I had my 16th in February although I lurked for a year before signing up.
The Free Republic URL was scribed on the back of a Newsmax poster board (I think) that a campaign volunteer was waving vigorously overhead, as she moved through the crowd that memorable night. Newsmax had just been founded- Sep. 16, 1998.
