I’m a gun-owning American but I hate the NRA
National Post ^ | June 30, 2015 | David Fellerath

Posted on 07/01/2015 9:02:57 AM PDT by rickmichaels

Some time after I bought my first gun, I got a robocall from the National Rifle Association, asking me to join. After the customary “Please stay on the line. . .” from a pleasant but earnest voice, I recoiled from the barkings of an angry-sounding man: “Did I know that Barack Hussein Obama and European leaders are meeting on American soil right now, at this very moment, to plot the confiscation of my guns?”

The caller continued with his insinuations of an imminent United Nations plot against America, but before I could be handed off to a live operator, I hung up the phone.

I was amused, and then insulted, that someone would think I was dumb enough to fall for such a pitch. But the sad truth is that there are enough people willing to open their checkbooks to make such a noxious fundraising appeal worthwhile.

The NRA claims to have 5 million dues-paying members (though there’s some reason to believe this figure is inflated). That sounds formidable, until one considers that there are approximately 50 million adults who own firearms. Still, the organization has successfully positioned itself as the singular representation of gun owners. For decades they’ve worked to defend and expand access to firearms in spite of polls showing that most Americans, including gun owners, favor laws that would limit access in various reasonable ways (even three-quarters of NRA households favor background checks prior to private gun sales). But when a U.S. congresswoman was shot in the face, the NRA made certain that no law was passed that would have made her safer. There’s no doubt that the NRA does have some grass-roots support, but it’s smaller than we think. The NRA does not represent all gun owners, and it certainly doesn’t represent me.

The only thing wrong with the NRA is that they're too wussified.

I'll take GOA or JPFO any say of the week...

Reminds me of comments to news articles where the commenter says something like “I used to be a conservative (or Republican) but...” and then launches into an anti-conservative rant.

“The NRA does not represent all gun owners, and it certainly doesn’t represent me.” SO move along agitprop. The NRA will still have enough funds to impact the election coming, and that must frost the behinds of those who lie and deceive in order to try and reduce impact of conservatism and lobbying groups opposed to the democrap agenda.

"Why do leftists have to hate something all the time?"

"The Pen is mightier than the sword", therefore David Fellerath must be guilty of a Hate Crime, right?

[BTW, I just learned this:"The English words "The pen is mightier than the sword" were first written by novelist and playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, in his historical play Cardinal Richelieu." - Who first said 'The pen is mightier than the sword'? ]

That would be tough to do if Algore had destroyed America first.

Why is it dishonest?

When you renew it extends your membership for whatever length of time you pay for.

It’s not like they’re trying to trick you in to paying twice for the same time period.

I did a little checking on your previous posts and then visited your BIO here on FR.

So, you are a Canadian and hates the NRA? Bought your first gun when Obama was elected? Have no idea how a culture like ours covets guns and the right of free speech and freedom?

Lecture those in Canada, not us. This is our country we are trying to save...not Canada. This is our battle to turn the tide of socialism/communism/marxism and political correctness so that we can take back the freedoms we were cheated out of over the past 40 years.

There is absolutely no way you can understand our way of life since you have not lived it.

I always thought it was “The penis mightier than the sword”.

Oh well. You learn something new every day.

Troll?

False flag waiving poseur?

Most likely, and a clumsy one at that.

He concludes his piece (if he indeed wrote it himself) with...

Rather than being our American birthright, gun ownership should be a privilege earned after thorough examination and training, like driving a car. But in 21st-century America, arms-bearing is an inalienable right, thanks to 27 anachronistic words of a constitution ratified in an 18th-century world of slow-loading muskets.

Of course, if gun ownership were an earned privilege, ownership as we know it would quickly be forbidden.

They told me in January that I needed to renew my membership but I checked my contract and it said my term didn't run out until October.

That's dishonest.

A guy named David Fellerath wrote the article. I’m pretty sure rickmichaels merely posted it.

I suppose they could be the same person, but more often than not the person who posts a National Review article is not the same person who wrote it.

The NRA does a good job in keeping the government from administratively erasing our Second Amendment rights and have done so for many years.

They are one of the few organizations which will stand toe to toe with legislators and the executive and simply say no.

I don’t disagree with their membership of 5 million as I know a number of people who are members who have never owned a gun. They feel that the 2nd Amendment is extremely important to the health of this country and its citizens and they put their money where their mouth is.

The number of gun owners is difficult to estimate but with the recent tsunami of gun sales, of which 30% appear to be first timers (FBI), my own estimate is about 120 million. A very large chunk of the electorate.

As to why the NRA is so dominant in the area of shooters organizations the answer is quite simple: They have been in existence since the 1870s, helping shooters to shoot safely and well, training our soldiers to shoot, sponsoring competitions and fostering the flow of information from experts to noobies. All this for 140 years or so.

This organization along some newer ones which have recently been formed such as the GOA (and which we welcome to the fray, numbers do indeed count) represent me and my family and they do it well. Some of their decisions are ones with which I disagree, but their actions are ones with which I mostly agree. Some of their actions could be described as tactical retreats but they are winning this war against those who would take our rights.

So I will continue to support the NRA as I have in the past.

The mail doesn’t bother me one bit. It is effective.

I wonder if he would agree with the following statement:

Rather than being our American birthright, freedom of speech and the press should be a privilege earned after thorough examination and training, like driving a car. But in 21st-century America, spouting one's ideas and thoughts is an inalienable right, thanks to 46 anachronistic words of a constitution ratified in an 18th-century world of slow-loading manual printing presses.

If you had renewed in January, for one year, your membership would have been extended until the following October.

That is NOT dishonest. You would receive one year’s membership upon paying for one year’s membership.

I receive the same mailings, and they do NOT tell you that you “need” to renew your membership. They offer you incentives to renew/extend your membership.

This *sshole can get down on his knees and thank the NRA that there’s ANYTHING left of the Second Amendment.

They’ve been fighting gun grabbers since before he was born.
